Interesting that the first Ga team mentioned is Marist at 39 and from there nobody from Cobb (East, west or anywhere) in there. Our programs are STRONG, that is not in doubt, but, doesn't seem to translate. Given that the reason for these programs seems to be specifically to prepare the kids for HS ball, I'm rather surprised at the lack of payoff.
Any ideas or thoughts? |

Is it that we have strong teams playing each other and no one is dominating and standing out like you can get in other areas of the country?
HS rankings are nice to see, but don't really tell me how good or bad the travel programs are doing in preparing our kids for HS and beyond.
What would be interesting to see is how many players out of these programs actually made their HS team. I would say it is pretty high.
There is not a National HS Playoff system that I am aware of.
I see two different groups approaching the HS situation.
1) Players play travel ball to better their chances of making the HS team.
2) Players play travel ball to develop them to better their chances of being able to play ball after HS. Playing in HS is a progression in that work cycle.
There has been no shortage of players in this area making it to College Ball or the pro's.

I am no expert on the make up of EC teams, but I would Imagine alot of their players are great HS players, just spread out on different teams. I dont know how zoning is set up in other states. It would be interesting to know if most of the top teams have "Magnet" school systems like Columbus where players can choose thier school. I know High Schools cant recruit but I am sure that some do a great job "attracting"(wink, wink) great ball players. |

Look under some East Cobb teams rosters. Found 12 that are going to Marist. |

As the kids get older, how many east/west Cobb address players are actually on the top 2 East Cobb teams? The older the kids get the further they travel to be on those 2 teams. I read today that this year in GA AAAAA there is no team north of Camden County that has fewer than 5 losses and part of that is due to the fact that many of the better teams schedule tough out of region early on in the season. A team with that many losses probably would not appear very high in a national HS ranking would they? I think even Columbus in AAA has quite a few losses so far this season... at least for Columbus. I'm not sure how one comes up with a national HS ranking anyway. |

First of all...bring on any of the top high school baseball teams in the nation to play the top Georgia teams.
Second, Georgia has increasingly become a hotbed of pro and college scouting, because of the strength of baseball in this state.
Third, if high school teams in other states play other, weaker teams all year (i.e. Mountain West, and Big Sky conferences in college), then they might look powerful. If, instead, they played high level high school teams all year, their records would not be as good.
Finally, people travel from all over Georgia to play with EC. There is NO WAY to think that EC is getting the level of players it gets from just that one area.
