I agree with Gwinnett that being pulled is extremely tough for most pitchers, they hate to lose. I think in a bracket game if a kid just doesn't have it or isn't playing right then sure pull him, pool game probably not. One quote I heard last year and really liked was from Monte Kiffin was "it takes ZERO talent to hustle" and personally a lack of hustle causes more than a few or the errors we see at the 11U level. Coaches putting kids in a position to fail is another story(kids who just can't play middle IF or can't catch fly balls put in the OF) Crying is absolutely a problem, but what about the coaches who are 10x harder on their own kid then the others and scream at them, berate them until they cry?? How is that preparing them for big boy ball?? Most of the crying we see at this level is gone in another year or so, two of the better players in the state playing for IMO the #1 12U team in the country used to get upset when the ball didn't always bounce their way. Some kids just take it a little harder than others, but those kids are just fine now and I would venture to guess that the rest of them will be in another year or so as well. |

SS, honestly I have not seen an instance where a kid has errored up multiple times in 1 inning and as a result given up multiple runs. I do believe something should be done before it effects the rest of the team. What that something is, well a great coach will know. I do agree with you on your points. Good thing I'm not a coach!!!...lol Thank goodness we don't treat them like adults or we might have kids yelling at each other, yelling at the umps, chewing tobacco, cussing, fighting, enjoying beers between games, letting there girlfriend come in the dugout...lol Or even they might start telling us parents how we better act....lol |

I'm not saying I haven't been too hard on mine in the past. I just don't think we should be so naive to think that a ground ball is why the boys were crying. This level of travel ball where the games aren't played in a series format really forces teams to win most of the games. That is where the pressure comes from IMO.
Brooks Conrad wasn't pulled because we had injuries to other IF and there was nobody healthy on the bench(we had already pinch hit our backup SS)...Bobby Cox absolutely has in the past pulled outfielders who made an error, and I can remember quite vividly Furcal getting snatched in the 4th for booting two balls in the same game. Pretty rare to see at this level I agree, but most teams don't carry 25 kids either!! |

EcbPappi, you really brought up a good topic. It was a long week for some of the coaches and parents. It's amazing to witness the expectation grown people toward their kids. Crying is unacceptable. A coach should never pull a player from a position HE selected for him. Pitching is different. YOU have to live with your decision until the next inning. An adult should NEVER embarrass a child for any reason especially in an extra curricular activity. After all isn't it for the LOVE of the game, win or loose. |
