Mr. Kirksey,
Id have to beg to differ on a few topics.
One is we all know who is really the best player at certain positions, some just dont want to admit that their son isnt or a player on their team isnt, but they think so because they are their's.
Second of all, if you were to do some sort of contract with the parents then it would be easy to take the top 12 kids in the age group and go play. The parents would just know up front of the cost and travel, contracts are the way to go. Unfortunately I dont have a son in this age group to comment on who is actually good and who is good in only some eyes.
And finally, I think we have a few players in our age group that dominate on the mound, up the middle and in the batter's box, we'll see in a month.
Insider, there's only 2 teams that can win the slugfest

So, you don't have a kid on a team either?? As far as the Slugfest, there are 3-4 east cobb teams that could win it, 643 or Shiloh are two others so that's 5 right there.

Who are the two teams that you think can win this?

Mike,

I guess I respecfully find myself on the other side of coach Mike again. I have seen a number of kids in this age group that have the ability to take over and dominate almost every game they play in. My take on a great/dominate player is a child that is one of the best hitters/defenders/pitchers on the field consistently, not just one game. He also has the ability to make the players around him better by his level of play. Let's just be honest, you have one of those type players that joined your team this year and you already had one from last year. So now you have at least 2 of those type players this year yourself. I can think of at least one and maybe 2 of those type players on the Stealth right now. They would have 3 if the one kid does not play up this year. That's 4 or 5 dominate players just off 2 of the best teams. I am sure a few of the kids playing up would be intrested in this type team and would come back to this age group to play full time, I know we would.

I have played with 4 of the current 12u Bandits and know many of the others quite well. This same formula works for them. There is no reason it cannot work in this age group. I don't think most kids would mind setting out an inning or so if the player that goes into their spot is also a great player. I agree if you tried to sit the same 3 or 4 kids all the time it would not work. But if you had to do that then you would not truly have the best 11 or 12 players around. It would also help if the coach did not have a son on the team. If he did his son would need to be one of the very best players so nobody could play the "Daddy Ball" card. It may not be possible with politics and logistics but man it sure would be fun to watch. I do believe the only organization that could draw that type talent to one team would be East Cobb. Again, they already have a history of doing this in the older age groups. I do agree it would be tougher to do at 11u than 12u. Good luck to all the teams playing in the Slugfest this year.

I don't recommend putting a radar gun on any kid under the age of 16 due to them trying to overthrow and risk injury, while I respect ecball posts and knowledge, I assure you no 11u kid is throwing 70 mph + on a radar gun. If you don't believe me, go borrow your HS baseball coaches' JUGS or Stalker gun and see for yourself with your own players, or go watch a showcase and sit behind scouts during the game. You will soon see what 70 mph, 80, and 90 mph really looks like.

Does anybody know where the break off point will be for Gold/Silver?? With 27 teams, I would imagine they would take the top 12 or 14 teams with the rest going to Silver.

They wouldn't have 3 brackets would they?

Don't think the EC Stars will be playing there, heard they were going to LaGrange to play that weekend so that leaves 26 teams.

This topic got off topic and became oriented towards debating certain teams and players. Many crossed the line and did not have time to clean it up. Deleted everything up to this point and all of you can continue on from this point. Sorry for those posts that were okay.

Getting back to the Slugfest, I see that the West Florida Young Guns are coming to town and the number of teams has expanded to 32. If that young gun team is anywhere near the same 9U team that I saw, they have to be one of the favs going in.

It looks like the schedules will be out this weekend, they are already available to for most of the other age groups. With 32 teams, you would think there will be 16 & 16 for gold and silver.

Looks like there are some really interesting pool games, I can't see more then 5-6 teams going 2-0 so that means there will be plenty of 1-1 teams in the top bracket.

Some games worth a look:

EC Titans vs. Middle GA Mocs
SP Wildcats vs. Shiloh
EC Raptors vs. Gamers Blue

13 teams will make Gold bracket, who do you like in the finals?

Basically you have three AAA teams vs. three major teams. We have a tough draw with the Titans and Select and could easily go 0-2.
I assume it would be better to finish last in the gold bracket then to win the silver or bronze.(IMHO) However others I spoke to have a different opinion.

I like your thinking there Moccs....I would always rather go 3 and out playing good teams than win a silver side of the bracket.

pappi, those look like some good match ups. I think sp wildcats will beat Shiloh. The Titan and Moccs matchup could go either way. Raptors and Gamers should be good too.

moccs, I don't know why you couldn't win against GA Select. I watched them last weekend when they lost to Ga Redbirds. They didn't seem like the team I remembered last season. In fact, my pick is for Moccs in that game. Good luck!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Gwinnett. Titans are a good team and if the Select team is the same one that played in Monroe in November that beat the Cardinals then we want underestimate them. One thing is for certain in a tournament like this is that every run scored will be critical in pool play and you cant afford to burn pitching. My concern is whether you should burn pitching in pool to make the gold or conserve to finish high in other brackets if you dont. Not that I am expecting an honest answer but does anyone have an opinion? Triple Crown limit is 5 or 6 until 5th game?

This one will be interesting for some teams. Too bad I will not make it up there. I think we will see an all East Cobb final. Glad to see some aaa teams jumping in this one. Some tend to shy away when facing some of the talent in this one.

I think Shiloh can beat Sandy Plains, we have played with all the kids from that team in the past and they should have the pitching to beat them....Not a gaurentee but just a prediction!! Also Mr. Newton, you were critical of 11U boys throwing complete games last week, I saw one pitcher pitch a complete game during an elimination game just last Sunday....Any thoughts??

Young Guns are TOUGH!!!

Everyone seems to be talking about this Young Gun team from Florida but what does anyone really know? Are they on the level of the Braves and Stealth?

If anyone has seen this team recently, a scouting report would be appreciated.

what I really know is that we all better tighten up our sneakers and be ready for some of the nastiest knee buckling 12/6 hooks we have ever seen, the Young Guns are easliy the favorite.
