Something tells me that everybody posting here (almost) has a son who does something baseball related year round. Here's my question and an observation:

Does doing SOMETHING in relationship to baseball (although scaled back in the winter) help overcome some of that awkward, clumsy stage every kid hits at some point?

I've seen kids who were awesome one year and just completely uncoordinated the next. I know that a growth spurt is partly to blame, but so was that kid's lack of anything baseball related over the winter. I think.

I guess I'm wondering if the growth spurt and clumsiness gets minimized by just continuing to work on things.

Or are all boys just kinda doomed at some point until they outgrow it? Trying to minimize the damage over here and need some encouragement!

rippit, in my opinion I think any workout that works on hand, eye, and feet coordination will help and minimize the clumsiness during the growth spurt. I would not say the athlete is done, they just need to know how to better manage the changes in their body. Hope this gives some insight

When my son was in his clumsy stage, I made him play rec basketball. It really helped his speed and clumsy feet!

Well - then he ought to be waaaaaaaay ahead of the curve. Tomorrow is the shortest day of the year. He can't wait for March. Here's hoping he isn't disappointed.

"but so was that kid's lack of anything baseball related over the winter. I think."

I don't agree with this statement at all. I don't believe taking time off from baseball activities, in the off-season, has any increasing effect on a kid;s lack of coordination.

Growth and physical inactivity are probably two of the leading contributors. In the winter it is harder to get outside and just do "stuff" than it is when the weather is warm. Even if that stuff is playing "spotlight" in the neighborhood.

13U is the "Baby Giraffe" stage. Not all kids go through it, but the ones growing 3-4 inches, or more, in 6 months will experience it to some extent.

Tumbling was the one thing that helped my son the most, during those times.
