What are some of the interesting stories out there involving recruiting, thinking of things like "a coach guaranteed me that my son would SS if we play with them" or I got recruited by a team while playing against them during a scrimmage game. Or a coach called me for 2 months and wouldn't take no for an answer, I'm sure there are plenty of those out there so let's hear them.

Heard someone offered $3K+ for a another team's player not too long ago. And that wasn't enough to get him!! What's the going rate for a top pitcher? $10K?? $15K?? Who's running the show in this age group.. Cecil Newton? Steinbrenner, Jr.??

I will share one with the board, there is a well known team out there that is famous for recruiting players off teams they invite for scrimmages.

Kids are only 11 once, might as well see what you can get!

My son is pretty decent pitcher, would consider any offer which included all expense paid concession stand for his 7 year old brother. Probably 3-5k per season.

I've heard there's a team out there offering up mouse ears to recruits. We just can't compete with that....

Thing is Grampa, recruiting is a part of the game and one should feel like they have the right players if another coach is recruiting your kids.

Perhaps it makes sense to institute a salary cap so us small market teams can compete, revenue sharing is also and option.

I think it's safe to say that any team offering money for another player to join their team is more concerned about winning than anything else. Unless the player is in NEED of financial help.

This is not a popular opinion but recruiting is a necessary evil for most teams, you never know when a kid is going to quit, move, tear a knee, get hit in the head, dad loses his job or any other of the unfortunate events that happen in peoples lives. All coaches should have a short list of players they would call should anything come up, who else are you going to find to take a roster spot on your team anyway? It's not like you have 5-6 very good ball players sitting at home watching cartoons on the weekends.

There is nothing wrong with calling a kid committed to another team to gauge interest in making a switch, if there is some interest then the talks continue and you go from there. To me, this is where parents need to decide quickly if their interested or happy with where they are at. If there is no interest, tell the coach your happy and ask them to call someone else, that's what I have always done. There is no need for a 2nd phone call, I usually tell them thanks but nothing is going to happen so don't waste your time. Now, I'm not sure where all of these teams can find the money to assist players financially but something about that just doesn't seem right. A player should pick a team based on other criteria, playing time, competitiveness of the team, location or perhaps the head coach.

Quick story about a similar type of situation. When my kid was 9 yrs old and playing rec ball, he was regarded as one of the top players at the park in his age group and the head coach of the all star team wanted him to play all stars pretty bad. We declined due to finances at the time so he ends up telling us that he will sponsor my child to play and he makes the choice to play. Well, that was a big mistake, the coach felt that he could play my kid in other positions so his buddies could play the primary spots. I guess he felt that we wouldn't care since they "took care of us" and wouldn't say a word. Never again, we always felt like the coach had something over us, felt really weird. just my $.02

simple coach, no games or tournaments to talk about so everyone else can only talk about what team is in the top 5 or who should be blah, blah, blah. I'm enjoying lacross myself although it's getting cold out there.

I'm glad this thread went dead. It exposes the ugly underbelly of travel baseball, and I prefer to read about more positive topics rather than a thread that could have been named "folks acting poorly".

I know its basketball, lacrosse, wrestling seasons, and baseball is not at the forefront right now, but let's find some bright, fun, shiny, happy, Holiday spirit-like topics to discuss.

MadSkills/bmoser,

I totally agree with both of your comments. Top teams will be decided on the field this Spring and then there will still be those who disagree.

Bandit Hawk also has a good point when it comes to financial aid to players in NEED. It is really sad that many good players can't play travel ball because their parents simply can't afford it.

This is even more relevant today with so many people out of work. I think the travel ball community should come up with a way to raise money that would be used to pay team fees for those less fortunate.

Spending time and energy on that kind of endeavor sure beats the hell out of figuring out what team is in the top 5 before the season even starts or spreading rumors about coaches paying for or "stealing" players from other teams.

IMHO, we should all take a few minutes and give thanks that we are fortunate enough to have sons that are healthy and talented enough to play the greatest game in the world at this high a level and that we all have the resources to make this happen.

God bless all, especially the coaches, supporters and of course the players that make travel ball happen. I hope everyone has a great holiday season.
