I noticed that in the younger age groups it's rare to see a double cut-off, will teams use that more now the fields are getting bigger? On a 200ft field, probably doesn't make sense.

I am assuming you are talking about tandem relays. There is really no need until probably 11U since you don't play on fields big enough to use it. I am going to teach our boys tandem relays in January and February so they are ready for bigger fields and what to do. The issue is making sure they know which fields we are going to use it on because if they try it on a 200 ft field we could give up throwing the baserunner out at second. |

Spartan4 - I'm with you, but not sure if we'll see an answer on that one. Maybe we can find out offline what folks are referring to.
I'm not a coach - just a dad.... But to answer your question, I'd bet teams will work double cut-off as they start to practice again in the spring. Good to introduce, and fun watching the kids try to pick it up too ;-) |

Add the first baseman trailing the runner to second and it gets real interesting. I think this is when we see some players fall off the baseball screen. Not to insult the intelligence of our kids but some of them just won't get it, therefore they'll start to see it more of a task rather than having fun playing baseball. Little did they know there was still a lot to baseball they haven't even seen yet. Hopefully, as coaches we'll continue to make things as fun and easy to understand as possible. Maybe this is also where we see certain coaches step back too. Not all coaches can implement everything needed to accomplish things at the next level. Primarily the tadem relay is used anytime the ball gets beyond the outfield to the fence or hit in the gaps, but field size definately plays a role and until 11u it's probably not neccessary to implement in a game but definately worth teaching so they can be ready. Just my 2 cents. |

Last year in 11u, we played on adult softball fields a couple of times that did not have temp screens/fencing set up in the outfield, so had to use double cut offs. |
