Astro won 2 games and lost 1. Nice turn out for their first tournament. The pitching was awesome and their bats were on fire!!!! Watch out the "Astro 10u" are looking good.

Bigtyme - nice job, who did your boys play? Not sure who all was in the tournament. Do you know who won? Thanks and congrats.

Thanks for the shout out bigtyme.
The Astros played 4 scrimmage games so far this season before this tourney so Sunday was the very first game for the team with players in their normal positions. Playing against teams that already have a full year of travel ball together was a great challenge. Also, two players from the 5 week old original team were not there and 1 player joined a few days ago.
We are VERY proud of how well they played especially against the perenially strong Warriors holding them to 1 run through 5 innings. If it were not for two fielding errors by the Astros in the top of the 6th then the score would have been, at worst, 1-0.
Strikers are a very good team but the Astro bats came alive for an 8-2 win and then the Generals, always strong and tough to beat, made it a tough game playing only 3 innings in 90 minutes with an Astro win of 8-7.
Not too shabby for the first games the team has ever played together.
The depth of pitching is excellent as we used only 5 of our 8 pitchers and they each threw over 74% strikes and combined walked only 3 batters over the 3 games.
OP looked very good, also, but then again all the teams played great Sunday.
The Astros will continue 2 a week practices throughout the winter and we hope to stay very competitive next spring.

There's alot of pressure on the 10U Astros to perform well just because they are from East Cobb and then they have the Astros name. Hard to play consistently with a target on your back all the time. Every team will send their best against them so I hope they hold up and remember to have fun!

Any links to tournament results? Good to hear the Astros are off to a good start but would be nice to hear how ALL the teams fared.

No target on their backs yet. As Coach0512 said, this team has only been together 5 weeks. Unlike the Longhorns and Yankees, this team will be targeted only once they show they can live up to ECB & Astros names.

Most, if not all, disagree. The ECB name belongs to the Longhorns and Yankees, who most teams will throw their best against. Mudcats is the next (most seasoned) ECB 10U team, thus they'll see second best. Astros will not see most team's aces, but I'm sure most would agree that we are interested in seeing how the Astros compete on a consistent basis against 643, Acworth, Oregon Park, Longhorns, Yankees, and Yard Dogs. They're the ones who chose the Astros name. They need to produce.

The self-promotion is nice, but I have to agree with gohornets assessment. The 10U ECB franchise is all about the Longhorns and Yankees. Having seen them both multiple times last season, they are clearly the class of that organization. I am actually quite interested to see the Astros roster given how late they were formed. Im sure coach Crossing will do a great job with that team.

Here are some results from the games that I heard about:

OP beat Strikers
Blue Jays beat Kennesaw
Warriors beat ECB Astros
ECB Astros beat Strikers
ECB Astros beat Kennesaw
OP beat Blue Jays
Warriors beat OP for Championship (6-5 I think)

The two that played in the championship know each other well, they've been battling since 7U Dizzy Dean and most are 1 run games. I do think there are a lot more new faces on Acworth than OP since those days.

I agree, CF, that the Longhorns and Yankees are stronger teams right now. I'm still out on the Mudcats as they have only practiced together a couple times and won't ramp up their efforts till closer to the spring. I know several of the kids on the Mudcats and they are a great group of players. But having coached with and against several of the Mudcats, when they were on other teams, I can make an honest assessment that player for player, the Astros have a slight edge. Their games will be very closely matched and fun to watch. On any given Sunday.................
The Longhorns are very well coached and tough to beat but beat they have been. Don't forget-the EC Navigators (now the Jackhammers) beat the Longhorns last year. And a couple of their players are now on the Astros.
I have to agree that the Longhorns and Yankees have the edge in the 10U group but beyond that I think it's up for grabs for 3rd and I would not discount EITHER the Astros or the Mudcats till we get 3 or 4 tourneys behind us.

The Mudcats are an interesting bunch. They have the potential to be really good with kids from 643, Shaw Park, Kennesaw and others. They should be a very good hitting team.

I have been waiting to see the Astros roster ever since I found out they formed the team. I have no idea where all their kids came from or how much experience they have. I will be at the OP Tournament next weekend and should have an informed opinion after that...

coach0512 please don't judge the Mudcats "...till we get 3 or 4 tourneys behind us", wait until June to see how we have progressed.
Always feel free to judge the coaches on how well (or poorly) we teach the players to play the game, but please don't judge the players until June. It's going to take that long to get rid of their bad habits.
While the goal is always to win, the long term goal is the only one that matters and that is to win our final game of the season, everything else is a means to that end.

Oh I agree with you 12U. I think you've got a great bunch of kids with alot of talent and I imagine both the Mudcats and the Astros will improve game to game. I think after 3 or 4 tourneys (9-16 games) that the learning curve of both teams will show great progression.
I think you underestimate yourself as a coaching staff and your kids-I'd bet you're gonna be winning more than your share of games before June! :)
Tell me, being new to EC as are the Astros, do you feel there are a lot of people who automatically think you're supposed to be playing better than teams who don't play out of EC? That they lie in wait for EC teams to have a bad game or tourney so they can pounce on you?
From what I've seen, most EC teams just want to get better at baseball and have fun. :)

I'm always the pessimist, it helps the paranoia.

IMHO, all East Cobb teams have targets on their backs because they are from East Cobb, and the teams named Astros have bigger and brighter targets. With so many ECB teams at an age group, saying you beat and ECB team in a tournament does not have the same "wow" factor as before, and since the Astros below 13U are not put together the same was as the upper groups, ALL teams take pride in knocking off the perceived "best" team from a park.

Each East Cobb coach has their own objectives, I have two: Put the kids into position to compete for a National Championship when they are 12 and to teach them the skill set to make the Varsity as a Freshman (can't do much about puberty, athleticism or the D-I prospect ahead of them).
