Hillio posted this is the General Discussion area a few weeks back. I thought I would bring it back up.
"Between Marietta, Acworth, Oregon Park, Powder Springs, Hiram, Dallas, Kennesaw, and the teams in the Canton/Woodstock area, there will be well over 20 competitive travel teams in the 10U age group for the 2011 season. I don't really forsee much of a decline in the number of teams in the years to come, and I was just wondering what it would take to start a travel baseball league similar to the Lanier League for the Cobb/Paulding area?"
I coach on a team in the Canton area and would love to not have to travel the distances we will have to travel if we play Lanier. NWBA could be that league if enough teams sign up. Are there any other teams that are interested? |

We would be very interested. We want to build a schedule at about the AA and AAA level to start out (just as a way to set expectations with you), and then find where we fit in from there. We will be playing three tournaments this fall, which should help us gauge where we are at.
Call or email me to discuss. lundbergjeff@hotmail.com 678 642 9211.
Thanks, very good idea.

Guys,
I coach with the Sharks. There is already a league just like the Lanier League here in Northwest GA, and it is right here at NWBA. Last year (9U) the OP Sharks, Eastside Hurricanes, Shaw Park and a team from Decatur (Oakhurst Titans) were the only four teams that participated. Ron Brooks ran it and did a great job, but we would love to have more participation. It is run as a series of home and away games and worked great for us. It was nice to have games that we could use for work that wasn't focused on a tournament. We will definately be participating again this year.

I would be interested in this as well, especially with a true A/AA division. My 13U team did NWBA this year and it went well overall. The age coordinator is free to set up the league as the participating teams desire having geographic divisions, feeder divisions, or by relative skill (AA/AAA, etc.). Coordination and communication were key to work around schedules, tournaments, etc. to get all of the games in. The end of season tournament seemed to extend on forever due to tournament conflicts in June but was ultimately completed.

I coached at Shaw Park last year, and am coaching at Sandy Plains this year and we will be in a league again this year. I hope we get more teams to join this year. It's a great way to get work for more pitchers and see how different kids play in a game at other positions without the win or go home stress of a tournament. I hope all of the teams in this area consider joining, it would be great to have 10-15 teams in the league this year. |

We would also be interested in a A/AA level league in Cobb County. We are a new team and unsure of our level. I'm willing to help organize it if we can get enough teams together.

We are definitely interested. I am coaching the other team at Sandy Plains and we are all new to travel ball. Would be a great way to play games closer to home and to get ready for the tournaments. |

Instead of playing in tournaments in the month of March (that always get rained out on Sunday) and they keep your money. Make a league that plays on Weekends and then teams further out can get in on it! |

I am going to keep repeating myself concerning league play. We let teams form divisions in each age group that are geographically sensible, level of competition, etc. Keep bouncing the ideas around and we will start the organization process a little later in the fall.

Looks like we could have enough teams for this to happen. The biggest complaint that I have heard and therefore reason not to play NWBA is games being cancelled. One coach said that Lanier has some kind of penalty for cancelling games but NWBA does not. Is this true? If so could we copy Lanier and put in place a similar penalty? |

We used to make teams put up a deposit at the beginning of the year and they would forfeit the deposit to the opposing team for a late cancellation or no-show. They would then have to put up another deposit before they could play another league game. At the end of the year all deposits were returned to the teams. This or something similar could be put back in place. It was removed by coaches vote quite a few years age because the instances were infrequent. Some age groups have had issues and some have not had any. So if the coaches want to vote a penalty that is possible. |
