Roadrunners/ Astros

Either one is #1 depending on the day. Roadrunners are the CABA champs so the Elite 32 may settle it.

Tenn. Tornados are solid but done for the season.

After those 3 everyone else is ??????

Honestly, I don't see how TBS came up with the recent 13U rankings. I consider all three to be top 10 teams nationally and I understand that on any given day the Astros, Roadrunners, or Tornados could beat one another depending on who is on the mound, who has the better defense, who is hitting better, etc. In my opinion the only fair way to compare these three great teams must be done using the games against the RRs as the Astros and Tornados have not played each other this season. With that said...here is my take.

Astros vs. Roadrunners
With the two recent wins up at CABA the series is now tied 3-3. Momentum was with the Astros early on, but I would appear that the momentum has shifted to the RRs going into the Elite 32 with the two CABA wins. The average margin of victory for the Astros is 7 runs. The average margin for the RRs is 4. Any argument against who should be ranked higher would have to then be based on either the mutual teams they have played or on other TBS ranked teams. Clearly the RRs have a better record against common opponents and have beaten more TBS top 25 ranked teams in bigger tournaments than the Astros this season. This may not give them the edge, but does give them higher ranking in my book.

Tornados vs. Roadrunners
The recent TT win at the Elite battle in the South has made the rivalry look better on paper, but by my account the RRs still have the edge with a 4-2-1 record against them with two wins at both the Alabama Super NIT and the TOC tournaments. The RRs won with an average margin of victory being 4 runs in their 4 wins. In the two RR losses the average margin was 1.5 runs.

As with the Astros, the same can also be said that the RRs have beaten more top 25 TBS teams than the TTs, but more importantly they have done so in a more convincing fashion. Take a look at the Alambama Super NIT, TOC, and the Elite Battle in the South if you have any doubts. After doing this I find it hard to put the TTs ahead of the RRs in any ranking national or regional.

Tornados vs. Astros
Since these two teams have yet to play this season we will never know who is the better team. I understand that football plays a big part in them ending their season, but it is a shame that the Tornados are not going to the Elite 32 as they are clearly one of the top teams in the nation. Based on having very little to go other than the top 25 teams they have played against I am going to give the Tornados the higher ranking until the Elite 32 has finished. I would expect this change then.

No disrespect meant to the Tornados as I think they are a fantastic team, but any ranking that puts them ahead of the Roadrunners is flawed. Chin Music makes the case in his post, and he is completely correct. Maybe TBS has someone on their rankings that is somehow connected to the BITS? Because honestly, the Tornados didn't play enough major tournaments merit being ranked that high. How many major tournaments did they play in? Three or four? Not enough.

Tater, is there a list of the major tournaments? Are the ones posted on TBS the major ones? I am not picking on your post or Chin Music’s. I always wondered when a team like ours (Tornados) are looking to fill there schedule, were do we look?

Fair question, Coach.

Let me begin by saying that any tournament played at Jack Mattox is not a major tournament. I read your reasons for playing there (to support the Ringgold baseball program, right?), but why not just write the program a check for the amount of the tournament fee? That way, they wouldn't have to have umpire fees, facility rental, etc. coming out of it. Anyway, no way the team you had should have ever played there.

Secondly, those tournaments in Knoxville, and especially the one you chose to play in instead of the Georgia USSSA state are not major tournaments. Besides RBI, I can't think of a single team in eastern Tennessee that could be considered a major team. You know that too. So, why even bother to schedule those tournaments?

You asked my opinion, so here it is: If I was making the schedule for this year's Tornados, I would have found every single tournament the Roadrunners and/or Astros were playing in and got in it too. That way, you know you'd have at least been in the same tournament against two measuring stick type teams. Now, I realize you played in BITS and TOC and did very well in both. Understand that I'm not saying that you guys aren't a great team. You are. No doubt about that.

Thanks, Coach. Steve is a great guy, and a very good baseball coach. I always enjoy talking with him.

I wish my son's team would have gotten to play the Tornados. We have lots of friends on that team and I always want my son to play against great competition. Good luck to you in the future.

Don't forget the Tornados missed two months of the season because of TSSAA rules not being allowed to play during middle school ball, we only played in 2 tournaments where the roadrunners or astros werent there and the tournament we played in Omaha was the same time as Ga USSSA State, and the time we scheduled and payed our entry fee there was 5 or 6 natinally ranked teams in it including the #1 team lamorinda. The tournament at Jack Mattox was a last minute thing on Memorial Day weekend, we werent going to play at all that weekend but the boys wanted to play against some of the kids they go to school with bottom line. I can understand your complaint about us being ranked ahead of the Road Runners, there was one game out the whole series that was lopsided in USSSA super nit, we just came off a 9 inning war the game before but no excuses they kicked our butt. Other than that we lost twice to them by one run and tied them. In my opinion the Road Runners were the best team I saw all year, we never got to play the Astros as they were eliminated before we could meet up, in the TOC. The RR, Astros and Tornados were clearly the cream of the crop in our area this year, all three teams had a great year regardless of ranking. We were treated very kindly and respectful everytime we traveled to East Cobb and I look forward to it again next year and hopefully we can financially be down there every weekend next year.

For some reason this topic got ugly and I stopped reviewing it. Because of limited time to go through and separate the good and bad all unmoderated posts are being deleted and we can start over. Sorry to those that had posts that were okay. Remember, you can have a different opinion just don't make personal attacks on someone.
