With High School season winding down , did your players playing time meet or exceed expectations?
Did the Head Coach hold up his end of the bargain that he laid out in his pre-season pump-up speech?
Did you find it to be business as usual, a political circus!
With my son's team , for most games ,better players were in the dugout than on the field!
If you experienced any of the scenarios, I would like to hear about them!

So amazing! I just read something yesterday (before reading this), that a local catcher signed a D1 (ACC) letter of intent. Maybe this is your son. Regardless, what an awesome ride for you and him!!! |

Wow, some journey Bball123. Congratulations!! Yes, you don't want to blink. Even now. My son is a senior in college this year and it went SO quick. Enjoy every minute!! Sounds like you have a very talented son. Best of luck in the years to come. Keep us up on his journey. |

Updating here,,
What an awesome summer playing with the best players in the country and the top teams in the country. After playing at Coney Island in the Met city Classic, San Diego in the Perfect Game All American Game on national TV, Tampa in the east coast pro, Phoenix Arizona in the PG world series, Jupiter Fl. in the WWBA world championships, Ft Myers in the National showcase. Making it through the second round of trials for Team USA before having to pull out of the trials due to conflicting schedules. Multiple tourneys and showcases all over the south, Ole Miss, Miss. St., Auburn, Clemson. Being selected for Junior team Ga, Ga dugout club top 100 and the Ga dugout preview magazine.

Awesome, Talent trumps all and although i know HS and the kid who was ahead of him and the college where he is committed, i love to hear about kid's winning and glad to hear the move and more importantly his achievements validate your beliefs. Great things ahead man.....cool stuff. |

Congrats to your son for reaping the rewards of the hard work that not many think about. Talent alone becomes cheaper and cheaper at each progressive level.

Thanks everyone, It has been very exciting. Caco3girl, As far as the costs of these trips. The Perfect game handled all of the players expenses. Most of these higher level teams have lots of sponsorships so many of the players costs are covered as well when playing with them. Our son is a senior and he makes very good grades, We knew going into the school year that he would be doing these trips so we worked it out with the school for him to do a lot that he missed online and he will have to make up anything that he misses. But these opportunity's were so great that we just had to make it happen. And the school loved it that when he was playing on National TV Sunday night they kept saying the schools name during the broadcast.
Rippit, I would love to, But I wont name the school publicly.

And it sounds like his old HS coach lost a very talented player. Keep us up on his progress. Especially if he winds up being drafted!! Awesome update!! |

from my experience, the schools are excited that they're students have these opportunities, so they are very accomodating. |

Question for everyone here on this topic..I have a rising high school player in a couple of years who goes to a private school...he really wants that "high school experience"....and hopes to play in college.....his school's team will be far less competitive than the public school. Is it worth pulling him from a good private school to play on a hot high school team? He plays travel of course. Will it hurt his playing if he plays on this almost rec ball level team before going back to travel in the summer? It sounds like in many cases the best players sit the bench in favor of the Palm greasers or under performing upperclassmen. What public high schools are doing it right? |

CaCO3Girl - Slightly different situation but one of my sons best friends just made the 15u USA Baseball team, and I asked his mom a similar question since he is missing most of the month of August from school with his time in Cary, Texas, and now in Mexico @ the Pan-Am games. She said the school was great, and faxes his work up to him daily so he can stay current with his peers.

He has a great baseball scholarship to an excellent D1 school with a great baseball program and is super excited about that. So again, I think you have to believe in your son and make a way. bballman as requested here is an update on my son since my last post. This past High School season we moved up a region, like the previous year he made 1st team All County again. Was offensive mvp for the team, he had a great season. Played for a very high level travel program this summer. Was invited to the Perfect Game National Showcase and came away with the best pop time in the nation in the 2016 class at 1.77 and was ranked #1 catcher in Ga. #8 overall player in Ga. #8 catcher and #62 overall player in the nation by PG. I'm not saying that Bball123 was not justified in the action he took with his son and they certainly have had a positive outcome as a result, but that doesn't mean that the coach has this reputation among everyone.
I really have no idea who this coach or school is, but I know of several coaches and HSs that this is the case. Some people on these teams would die for the coach and others hated him. Either way, these coaches had a TON of college contacts and have had multiple players move on to the next level.
In response to the other question about where kids get recruited from. Mostly, it is from travel ball. College coaches just don't have the time in the spring to go to HS games. They are playing their own season during that time. However, Bball123's comment about a coach asking about HS ball is valid - at least in my mind. How do you answer that question with out sounding like you are making excuses or whining about the situation?
While I am not a big fan of switching schools, I do understand that there are some situations where this could be what needs to be done. Congratulations to your son Bball123!! I hope he has a great HS career and goes on to great things at his college!! Keep us posted on how things go.

My advice would be - you never get a second chance to make a first impression - so practice really hard before your HS tryout or first game or two. If your HS coach doesn't have 30 games of data to judge performance by and the preseason is very limited in HS, you need to shine early to get the playing time and get your confidence going. Stay positive, in HS baseball, the squeaky wheel does usually get the oil.
HS programs vary greatly in terms of potential players. In Cobb county, some 6AAAAAA schools have 140 kids at tryouts and some 40. Our school has been on the 40 end of the spectrum but the experience has been good. This year should be the beginning of an improving trend. The school has completed most of its facelift and now the baseball field facilities are being upgraded and most importantly, we now have a new highly qualified coaching staff that will run the show this year and bring some stability and direction to the program. |

Who knows Brittany, Regardless of college ball. Do you think its right for some guy in a coaches shirt to control your sons ability to play baseball at his school? Not on his baseball ability or talent, not on his merit. But because of hidden relationships and fundraising quotas? Does that seem right to you? To take years of hard work and throw it out the window BEFORE the tryouts are even held because of backroom politics?
Regardless of college ball, That's just not right no matter who you are or how you cut it. I guess some people will, like good little sheep, lay down and take that. Im not wrapped that way.
Good luck with your quest, whatever that may be. Maybe my answers to all of this isn't right for you and your son, I don't know.
But they were right for us. |
