It is an effective part of the game. My son is good at doing this but I already warned him - if you do it, be ready to get thrown at during the next at bat.
I've never heard anyone describe it as a cheap play. It would seem that all the pro's were supporting the exact kind of play you describe while the con's were pointing out the safety concerns of doing this on the smaller fields with the corners already close to the batter with a big barrel trampoline bat. I don't know that anyone has ever characterized is as cheap.
Just saw Jurrjens do a slash bunt for a base hit tonight. Son's 16 year old team practices it. Had it done against us in a 17u tournament last weekend. Agree that it could be dangerous with the younger players though.
the vast majority of posters agreed it is too unsafe for boys under 13. I agree. 13U on up, slash away! If you disagree witht eh overwhelming majority, that's your choice.

Moser, Only unsafe at a young age if coach plays his kids charging at a bunter trying to scare him into a mistake..never too young to teach the game of baseball
You try to take away the advantage, we take it back
