Is there a time to let Baserunners think for themselves? At what age should you give them free run of base running? Should you just do it in certain games? Would it help them learn more about judging if they should go or stay? Should they coach the bases in a scrimmage game to help with this also. I think it's a good idea from time to time to let them loose. On the other side don't most college players have to listen and take direction from the base coach. Can a runner make a quicker decisions than a coach at that level? What is quicker to process verbal signal or audible signal?
There is more to coaching bases then go or don't go. I don't expect the runners to consider how many outs, runs, inning and lineup before making a base running decision. So for them to be on their own is not practical. As a coach I do consider all those things for each batter so I can make that split decision in the heat of the moment. The only time my players have the green light is on a passed ball or pick off. If a coach has to yell "go" or "back" it is probably too late. Now I have used players as first base coaches and it was very eye opening for them. They didn't realize how much you have to pay attention and make a quick decisions.
I want my players (11u) to think, react, and make decisions on their own. This is how you learn to run the bases and play the game as a whole. This does not mean they have a "green light". We as coaches give the signs and handle the game strategy but we expect our players to know the game situation, anticipate what may happen, and react accordingly. Players who rely on a coach to "Go" or "Get back" are going to be a step slow in either direction.
I like to utilize as many tactics to stimulate as many senses as possible.....I go with both verbal and visual. Of course being Irish, we learn to talk with our hands at the same time as when we learn to speak....and with lots of emotion so I have to use both !!!!
