1. Teams are looking for players first. Not the other way around. Without the players there is no team. 2. Remove the cons who are only in it for a big 1 day payday. 3. Registration Fee?? For What? 4. It's the risk of looking for players. (keyword: LOOKING) |

Seems like a money grab to me, a couple teams picked up on that from ECB then everyone tried to follow to make easy money. Other than ECB, I don't see any justification for it.
Go look up some of these teams results on the various websites and you will see some are not very good, yet they are trying to charge players to tryout, why? |

So, you have eliminated:
ECB 643 Team Elite Rawlings South East and pretty much every major team.....
Now there do appear to be several NON-Major teams that are charging more than $25 and that I don't get. Renting a field, having coaches there to evaluate...etc...yes, these cost money but not more than $25.
I especially love it when these NON-major teams charge more than $25 for their tryouts and then list that they are hiring coaches in the classified section. So you don't have coaches and are renting a field for tryouts that you don't even own...yeah...I'm sure you are solid! |

Team Elite has no fee for returning players, can't say that for other organizations mentioned. |

I am with a younger age group, we have played some teams off your list, please define "major", because we are a not a "major" team but sure beat them when we played.
ECB has their own facility and started the tryout clinic thing so in that case ok for those who are willing to pay it. But why are teams holding tryout at public parks or fields and think they can charge a tryout fee to put money in their pocket when the teams are not even good to begin with?

Some are not even trying to field a team. Do the math: $50 per x 100 = $5000 for doing nothing. Easiest payday going today. People give you money even before doing anything. The fee may seem low until you add it up. I'll workout a few kids and 1 1/2 for $5K. Good chance your kid will get more out of it than douches running the tryouts. Public Park?? No excuse for that. Rent the field, eat the cost. |

I think I saw one team on here wanting to charge $100 for their tryout, I mean clinic. Seriously? That is a red flag. |

Really? $100. I guess "clinic" is the new word for more money. A lot of people do not even bring home $100 a day. That's insane. |

It gets worst... some places anounce they have all open spots and there is no guarantee spots for returning players and that is the biggest lie I have ever heard in travel baseball... they are looking for 1 or 2, maybe. |

ECB has maybe 2 major teams, everyone else is paying for the name on their shirt but could be beat by almost anyone. They may say it's a clinic but it isn't, it's a lot of standing around.
Team Elite, same story...maybe 2 major teams and then fundraiser teams, i.e. they pay team elite for the name but aren't major teams. I do find it interesting that the Team Elite Teams don't necessarily practice together. Last time I checked they had 3+ locations to practice at, so if you are 12u and live in Roswell you don't have to drive to Winder to practice, there is a practice being run near you and each practice is doing the same thing that day....very interesting approach.
643 has three teams per age group every year and they have an A Team, B team, and C team. Now 643 is legit holding a clinic. Many different locations and rotations of small groups. It's also staffed by knowledgeable people and the coaches WILL stop the flow of things to correct a kids form/fielding/stance...etc.
I agree, many teams say every spot is open and every team lies about that. They usually have at least a core of 8 they are keeping. |

Worse is when they post a tryout but do not know who the coach is and still want money for a tryout. Coach will be assigned after the players are selected???? Shouldn't the coach select the players?? |

ECB has multipe "major" teams at all age groups. Unlike 6-4-3 and Team Elite, all of these teams are not academy teams. Obviously, the Astros and Colt 45's are the academy teams at ECB. However, they are not the only major teams in the respective age groups. For example, at 12U, the ECB Yankees and ECB Tigers are both very competitive "major" teams. At some the older ages, the Braves and Yankees are also competitive major teams along with the 'Stros and Colts. None of these teams are academy teams but are also not just "paying to play with the ECB name" on their chests.

ECB is a baseball business. When kids hit 16 it becomes a HUGE business. That is why they have ELEVEN 16u teams, they aren't all major, they aren't even half major. 15u and under they typically have TWO Major teams. The names may change, for example the 14u ECB Colt 45's don't have a great record this year, but at 17u it is one of the premier teams, but they do typically have at least 2 majors teams.
Every now and then a dad coaches ECB team can become Major if they keep their core, but the majority of the dad coached ECB teams are fundraiser teams that pay for the name. Many times fully formed teams will come from a local park and pay to rent the name of East Cobb.
My point is just because an East Cobb teams offers your kid a spot it doesn't make it a major team. |

Looks like some word play and double-talk is going on (someone is in sales). My take on it is that if you are wearing their brand, you are an academy team. Period. If not an academy team, then why wear their brand or even be associated?
Now as more and more tryout postings pop up there are more charging for tryouts (clinics). Guess the thought is even if we don't make a team, we will get some money out of it. Take a few kids thru some simple drills for an hr and a half and bring take home close to 5K tax free. |

Sorry Punishers, you are wrong. Not all ECB teams are academy teams, many of the teams do not even practice at ECB. It is in the contract of every ECB team that they MUST have an alternate field available for practice. Why? Because if ECB can sell your practice field to a tourney they will. The only teams this does not happen to are the true academy teams, which are few and far between. These teams are coached by ECB employees and are usually at least partially sponsored.
You asked why wear the name if you aren't an academy team? This goes back to the "What if we were all more educated on travel ball" thread. Short version is Timmy's parents are convinced their kid is great and if he could just get on any ECB team then the Astros will surely notice him. The fact that Timmy doesn't practice at ECB and the higher ups at ECB couldn't pick him out of a line up doesn't really matter. ELEVEN 16u teams kind of proves my point. |

Understandable. I still say academy by association and branding. Doesn't matter if they train at their facilities or not, they still get a cut of the money from the team for their branding. |

Yes, ECB gets a cut of the money for team XYZ having their name on their shirt, but team XYZ doesn't get anything from ECB. Only the true academy teams get the resources of ECB. |

Not totally true. I cannot think of a team (sub-13U) that didn't have TWO practice times available AT the East Cobb Complex this past spring. Now, whether they were preferred days/times or not, isn't the discussion, but they DID have them. So the fields-- nicer than most-- are a "resource" of ECB that "team XYZ" gets to take advantage of... That may not mean a whole lot, but I've see plenty of 'fields' (term used loosely, think more like cow pasture) teams have to practice on with different organizations or independent teams, that would LOVE that "resource".
Yes Team XYZ gets assigned two practice slots, let's say Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm. Great slots, sadly in the Spring ECB typically sells their practice field. Kids get an email an hour prior to practice from coach on Tuesday that "just heard" ECB took the field, practice is cancelled". Thursday kids show up to practice and the field is occupied by a game in progress, oh well guess we will hit in the cages. I would estimate the amount of actual practices that happen AT ECB in the Spring is less than 20%.
The coaching contract of every ECB team clearly states they have the right to use the field for their own needs and they make each coach list the exact location of their back up field...incidentally this back up field costs an additional $200 per kid and it's typically at the previously mentioned cow pasture, or softball field (which is not great for 14u and up!) which is all that is available.

For 13U and below, I've never ONCE heard of ECB 'selling' your practice slot. SURE, everyone knows-- or should know, that there are tourneys that sometimes (rarely) start on Thursday evenings. I can think of only ONE that did this year (Triple Crown). That's kinda like taking a Sat or Sun slot and then complaining about the tourneys. Well, you should have known, or requested something different. I have dozens of dozens of friends who have played out of ECB over the years, and not one can confirm this as happening. (again, outside of a rare Thursday night start to a tourney).
Now, for the 14U+ and the upper fields, sure I could see those, in early spring getting used for the 'homeschool' league or some high school games, but then again, any 14U+ should be playing school ball in Feb-May.

I've lived it below 14u, I've lived it above 14u. The year we left for Cooperstown they hadn't practiced at ECB in more than a month.
-Home school leagues -Rec park leagues that sell the week long tourney at ECB for their "grand finale" -They stole the 11u slot last week so they steal the 12u slot this week so the 11u kids can practice. -Field maintenance -It barely drizzled but they MUST protect the mound for the weekend tourney -Private lessons given by ECB staff -one kid didn't pay their spring fee so the entire team can't practice because you haven't been assigned a slot -Two teams were given the same slot, they don't want to scrimmage so you have to go
Think of 100 random excuses on WHY you can't practice and I have heard them. Now, if your friend was on the Astros they likely didn't have this experience. If it's a dad coached team ask them how many time it happened to them, because I've never heard of it NOT happening.

I agree completely. We have NEVER had a practice cancelled because ECB "sold" our practice slot. Have we had practice cancelled because the fields were under repair? Yes. Cancelled because the fields took on too much water? Yes. Even cancelled when a very large tournament was taking place. However, we were usually participating in this same tournament. Those are the only circumstances where I have seen practice cancelled on the "Lower Fields" where the 13U and under practice. We had 100% of our practices at ECB this past spring. quote: Originally posted by turntwo
