What is the best winter sport to compliment baseball?
Indoor Soccer
Wrestling
Basketball
Other

Other!?!?

Last year our new coach made all our high school baseball players not on the basketball team join the swimming team. (No other boy's varsity winter sports at our school.) I don't know if there was a direct correlation, but we did not have one arm problem on either the JV or Varsity teams last year. All the players I talked to said they felt stronger after the swimming season.

I'm not sure I believe there is a single sport that is "best" to prepare and compliment one's baseball skills. I really think the answer is any sport. Some sports utilize some specific movements which certainly will enhance an athletes baseball skills. As a wrestling coach, I'd love to say wrestling is best but if you do a "risk reward" assessment, and take injury into account, I'd have to say swimming is one of the safest sports with high rewards. It kind of depends upon the individual athlete and what they need work on.

In a nutshell, I really believe cross training is the best.

This makes a lot of sense. Swimming works on so many different muscles in the body at the same time. It also increases cardio fitness and stamina.

My wife has been looking for a place to take my son to swim, this winter, as part of his off-season workout. We don't have a membership to the Y but may have to get him a youth membership to go there. I think it is a great workout, especially for pitchers shoulders.

Besides just swimming, there is also a drill you can do in the pool with a whiffleball bat. Get in shoulder deep water and practice your swing with the bat moving through the water. The water creates resistance and helps develop those muscles. (Suggestion is to do it from both sides even if you are not a switch hitter. This will keep one side from getting over-developed and risk pulling something.) It also alows the user to see if they are doing something wrong (hands getting out away from the body, pulling the shoulder out, etc)

gasbag, are you saying wrestling is probably high risk for injury? I would think there are some knee ankle and shoulder neck risks but know nothing about the sport.

Alter - Swimming is awesome and I have gotten a family Y membership for this. They have yet to get back to me on whether they have a drop 3 minimum for pool batting or not In all seriousness - that sounds like a great drill! May give that some tries - very similar to pushing through the weighted bag I think.

Swimming is a great sport but be careful not to do too much if your child is a pitcher/catcher. Similar overhead motion can put stress on shoulder ligaments and tendons you should be resting at this time of year. Sorry don't have a link, but google shoulder repetitive motion injuries for more info.

Rocky - Because it's a contact sport, there is a higher chance of injury in wrestling than swimming. Compared to football or lacrosse, there is less injury in wrestling vs. those as the contact is constant and not running start with pads etc. We see far fewer leg injuries in wrestling than in football and lacrosse and I'll venture to say perhaps even soccer. We do see dislocated shoulders occasionally, some knee and ankle injuries, neck and back occasionally as well but not many. I've heard of swimming injuries even less, usually shoulder or neck but not many at all.

How about whatever HE wants?

One fall one of my sons was trying to decide whether to play baseball, football or lacrosse. He was really torn. The conversation went,

"Maybe I just won't play anything."

"That's fine, that would give you an opportunity to take piano lessons."

We were online that night signing up for lacrosse.

Indoor Lacrosse is another alternative. I believe they still have the winter league at the North Cobb YMCA.

Wrestling without a doubt, if you can take the conditioning. Most can't. If you can you'll be in the best shape of your life in the spring.

A good latch hook or crossword puzzle in front of the fire place. Ha ha. I am a little concerned as I was speaking to a parent of a team of 8 and 9 year olds and they said they were doing off-season weight lifting. Did not go into specifics but thought that any heavy lifting such as bench press and squats is something they should avoid until 12 or 13. That is what I have been told. I am all for speed and agility to help with hand-eye and foot-eye coordination but not to sure about the weight lifting.
