| I have a few questions about Gwinnett baseball. I know Gwinnett has strong high school baseball teams but how do some of the younger and older travel organizations/teams fair in the Metro area? Specifically, in the upcoming 12U division; Are there any strong AAA/major level teams that will be competing against top competition in Metro Atlanta? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance! |

Welcome JClemente.
Gwinnett has tons of baseball talent as you can see from the high school teams. Youth on the other hand is a different story. County strong hold control of the park fields is the biggest hurdle. They have this illusion that the park associated sports are like minor league for high school, hence each park is associated near a high school. May work in football, but baseball and basketball are different. GGBL with clueless dads coaching (most who have never played or coached an organized sport a day in their lives) limit and dilute the talent pool. Plus you get what you pay for. Some of these guys actually to have to balls to charge paid coach prices. They may play 2 or 3 tournaments per season (Fall and Spring), but will run from the more competitive teams and tournaments. Usually top players end up on private-professionally coached teams in the metro area. Some parks have true travel teams, but still have that dad element. Most, if not all of the high school players have played or still playing on high level travel teams.
What I have noticed is that there seems to be more high level teams outside of county due to those other counties not trying to assert themselves and their control over youth sports.
It all depends what you are looking for.
If you looking for high level coaching, play, and training. There are a few professionally coached teams around. Team Elite is one that I can think of in the area. There may be a few team out of Signature Park.
If you are looking for more games to play, some development, highly social atmosphere, a cheaper price, and ok with a dad coaching with no high level playing or coaching resume. GGBL (2016 fee per team $550) and Park associated travel teams is where you are at.
Just summing it up in a nut shell as much as possible. Others may see it differently. |

| Signature Park Storm tends to be a solid team in that age group. I am not sure of their Cooperstown status..going or not. Pretty sure Team Elite will go, if this figures into your decision. |

This is spot on except for a few isolated examples.
I will add that if your son wants to play high school baseball, you should get him on a team that will play the highest level of competition that he can honestly compete against.
Playing weak competition doesn't help and playing far above his level won't help either, but he must be challenged. It's the only way to get better. |

Not every Gwinnett "cluster" travel team plays GGBL, not all GGBL teams are coached by "dads".
You'll find some good and bad paid coaches, and some good and bad 'dad' coaches who are more than capable of preparing kids for HS ball and beyond (if that's what they are looking for). Take the time to meet and discuss what you are looking for.
County 'strong hold' on the parks comes from, well...everyone's tax dollars so yes, the funds will go to the clusters that are set up to not just support the schools but also the local community. Those parks were put there to support rec primarily, though each cluster I'm aware of has travel baseball programs. |
