I was just wondering how you guys feel about players from the south side of Atlanta playing on teams up north. Does it usually work out? We played at East Cobb or Alpharetta most weekends anyway. Just looking for past experiences. Thanks. |

If anything practice may be the hard part..When a team has players that may or may not come to practice because of the travel time may cause problems with players that may be on the bench..If they are good ball players what does it matter where they are from.. Practice will be the big thing... |

It's not just north and south. We're eastsiders and from playing on teams in E. Cobb and now N. Fulton, just making practices can be a chore. But it is something you get used to if you want to go where the quality is. It really puts the "travel" in travelball. |

We have been traveling to play for the last 3 years. 1-1/2 hrs to Peachtree City and this past year 1hr + depending on traffic to East Cobb.
It ain't for everyone and with kids in school it can be tough, we have done alot of homework in the car.
It can be worth it for the right team situation, but you better know what you are getting into and what will be expected of you.
It is NOT worth the drive just to say you play at East Cobb. It also depends on the parents work schedules if it is even possible to get your kid to a 5:30 or 6 O Clock game/practice.
I have seen it work and I have seen it fail.
How far " south " are you? and how close to the interstate?
What age? |

We live in the Newnan/Peachtree City area. We only live about a mile from the interstate. My youngest will be playing 13u next season. The options are just very limited for his age group in this area. We are considering maybe trying out for a team but wanted to get some advice before making a decision. Any suggestions for a team/park to consider or is it too late? |

the travel distance from peachtree city to cobb cty isn't worth it unless the team/coach and family situation is exactly what you are looking for. if you are traveling all that way for what sounds like a first time travel experience going into the situation a little blind on the team or coach i wouldn't think of it. You would be suprised how many southside teams there are if you ask around, watch this site, do a little networkign by showing up at the fields around where you live and talk to the coaches |

Have you tried Homeplate or The Dugout Club? These are two clubs on the southside. |

Yes we have. My son is trying out for one of those teams. If he doesn't make that team we will start looking somewhere else. I just hope it isn't too late. Most teams have already had tryouts. I was thinking that we were at Marietta, Kennesaw or Alpharetta just about every weekend anyway and it can't be much different playing on a team up there. I understand about the practices.. it is a long drive. My concern is that in order to stay on this side of town my son would have to drop down a level and I'm not sure if we should do that. Just so you will know...Homeplate and Dugout club merged and are now one organization. Thanks for the responses. |

I live in Covington (East side) and traveled to East Cobb last spring. I can tell you that it is VERY different going up to Marietta a couple times a week and on the weekend than just going for a weekend tournament. It is a commitment that you really need to be prepared for. I didn't know everything it entailed until about mid-spring season. You have to take an honest look at your situation and make a family decision if it's something that you can do not just for the moment, but an entire season. I say family decision because it will affect the entire family in one way or another. Your son is the same age as mine so you must also look at how are his grades in school because they may suffer. You will often do homework and study in the car and get home late during the week. Luckily my son was able to manage but it is something to consider.
I too understand your concern about the level of play of teams on your side of town, but I have to ask you the question I asked myself this year. Are you more concerned with your son playing on a winning 13u team or receiving good coaching during this important 13u season? If the team only wins 70% of their games but he is being coached well is it worth playing closer to home. There are some really good 13u coaches out there with college and pro experience on the east and south side of towns. I found one. You have to do a little research as "Shut Out" said. There is still time to play at East Cobb, believe me it's not going anywhere. :-)
Also...Hardcore Baseball is no longer together. |

Use the money that you will spend on travel expenses & team fees and put it to a good coach in your area. learning proper hitting/fielding & pitching mechanics now will provide the foundation for a successful future.
Playing on an elite team @ 12, 13 or 14 is for those ego maniac parents. It becomes far more important @ the older ages when there are actually college & pro scouts in attendance. It is not necassary to be in ECB at the younger ages to participate in the older ages. There is so much turnover @ ECB year over year |
