What is the problem with youth sports?
Matthew Kempf – General Manager for Doyle's NEXTLVL Sports Institute Let me start by addressing some issues that I have as a father of 4 in regard to youth sports. As a high school athletic director and coach and also a collegiate coach, I have been privileged to deal with the positives and negatives of young athletes desire to play sports at the next level. I have had some athletes come to me with very little experience but great athleticism, some with plenty of experience but very little athleticism and the select few who have had a good combination of athleticism and experience. It has surprised me however how many times an athlete has come to me and I have been the first coach to tell them the truth about their ability or knowledge of the game. Many times when having to give an athlete some bad news such as: - You didn’t make the team - You don’t have the knowledge necessary to compete at this level - Sorry, you just aren’t good enough to help this team - You haven’t had enough training to play at this level It has almost always been received with disbelief and a reaction that includes statements such as: - I have been playing since I was 4! - I played on a travel team and they said I was good enough to play in college! - I made the all-star team every year! - I have been taking private lessons! This pattern caused me to do some research that led me to some basic problems with youth athletic programs, rec leagues, and travel ball organizations in our society. I would like to explain what I feel is the core problem with our youth sports culture and present a solution! The Core Issue I believe that the core issue we have in youth sports is a combination of entitlement and excuses of parents and their athletes along with the capitalization of consumer ignorance and arrogance by organizations. Let me explain these a little further. First of all, lets look at the issues of entitlement and excuses. We live in a society that likes to make every person feel that they are equal, everyone is a winner, everyone deserves to play, and everyone who wants to play will get a chance to play as much as everyone else. We also have downplayed the value of learning lessons from losing or disappointment that athletics can create and teach.
This entitlement causes players and parents to feel that their children are better than they are because they play against a much lower level of competition and athletes who wouldn’t have made teams a few years ago will now not only make teams but also make all-star teams. Then the arrogance of the parents starts to surface as they feel their “young prodigy” has the potential to “play professionally” or be a college athlete because they are one of the all stars of their league. They are then told and sold on the opportunity to be great high school and college athletes if they will invest in private lessons and to play in travel organizations. Now, in some cases, the athlete is the best and does have the potential to play at higher levels but far too often and a much higher percentage of the time, the focus is making the family happy because they are paying for the experience rather than the true development of the athlete. SO we see the better athletes and more “dedicated and serious” parents leaving rec organizations for higher priced but equally poorly qualified opportunities for their athlete to truly develop their skills in a particular sport. Travel organizations have capitalized on this from a monetary standpoint but few actually prepare the athlete with quality instruction that will position them for the advancement of an athletic career. I have seen many athletes specialize entirely too early in a particular sport and then by the time they are high school age are completely burnt out and the game is no longer fun for them and the pressure to perform to a certain level of parents or coaches is overwhelming. To sum up the core issue, I believe that we are truly lacking in 3 areas: - Sports IQ or knowledge of the fundamentals of the game - Competitive Situations and Actions created - Coaches with proper education and ability These three issues have led to athletes coming to tryout for me that can not perform fundamental skills, lack basic knowledge of skills and strategies of the game, do not have a good sense of teamwork and selflessness or have been coached effectively to deal with personal or team failure. This has caused me to not only work to identify the issues but present a possible solution. The Solution I feel that the solution lies in the ability to have the correct focus on development. If the practice structure is not developed to enhance great development of game performance, then there are few instances, if any, where great training in practice will actually speed up the development process. Unfortunately, too many times we see a practice that has a singular focus, very slow and boring in execution and more time is wasted than used effectively. We feel we have developed a system that addresses the 3 main issues and it is called X-plosion – Baseball with the volume turned up. X-plosion Fall league run by NEXTLVL is designed to ensure we have X-plosive growth in Baseball IQ, Competitive Action, and Coaching Education. We accomplish this by challenging the normal thoughts when it comes to practice time and game execution. The current societal thought of focusing on the individual skill and development during practice while periodically putting them in game situations needs to be changed to create a more dynamic, game like experience. This system has resulted in poor development in players skills overall and has driven the better athletes to alternate leagues for better opportunities to develop. Now, consider X-plosion. The X-plosion format will turn the volume up between the lines for both coaches and players alike. Gone are the days of a practice or modified game where the experience is slow paced play with minimal opportunities to increase baseball IQ, instead we focus on competitive games created with equal opportunities to experience different competitive situations at various skill levels. The game is played with two teams, each getting six outs so your child is guaranteed 3-4 meaningful at bats. We also control the game play by not allowing walks, putting people on base to start the inning, and forcing pressure game like situations into the game play. Along with having certified NEXTLVL Instructors to actually stop and teach when necessary and making sure the performance is improving by increasing the IQ of coaches and players, you have a formula that meets all the needs at once while creating a very exciting atmosphere for the players and parents! Coaches will be challenged to think about managing different situations constantly so when they present themselves later, they are prepared to remind the team of past execution vs. trying to teach on the fly! How many times have you heard a coach give the answer to poor execution of his team with “we just didn’t have time to work on that in practice”. X-plosion is designed to take that excuse away. How many times have you watched a game where there was an hour and a half of baseball and 1-2 meaningful moments that involved your athlete either at the plate or in the field? X-plosion puts them in multiple situations every few minutes by design. How many times have you watched a slow, boring practice and felt like you wasted time and no improvement or minimal improvement was made? X-plosion will speed up the game, thus speeding up the learning curve. X-plosion has been developed from the old strategy of Doyle showcases that were designed for scouts to evaluate talent in the past. They loved the fact they could see many situations and at bats in game situations being played in a short amount of time. We are bringing it now to the youth stages for you to take advantage of! NEXTLVL is proud to launch X-plosion Fall league this Fall 2016 and play “Baseball with the volume turned up” Are you ready for an X-plosion?
