The 2009 Demarini Voodoo is an excellent drop 5. Very balanced with a good portion of the weight in the handle. The drop 3 is also a very well balanced bat. My older son used that bat (drop 3) this past travel season and another player would occassionally use it as well. After a full season there isn't a hint of a dent or ding. Very solid with good pop and balance.
I will second the Voodoo. I think Demarini also made a -5 CF3 last year if you like a more end loaded bat. After three years of Demarini I'm starting to drift back to the Easton bats however.
I've been doing the same thing myself. There seems to be a much smaller selection of -5 bats compared to the -10, -8, and -3 bats. Louisville Slugger seems to have the greatest selection with the Triton, H2 Hybrid and Omaha models. The all seem to have pretty good pop, but I keep hearing that the Omaha has the most. Easton also has a couple of new models (Stealth and V12) of which I hear the V12 is nice. Personally, I'm waiting for the 2010 DeMarini Vexxum to come out latter this fall. My son has been using the 32/24 CF3 and has been really happy with its performance.
All this talk about hot bats just get them a bat they like the color of and it feels good to them and is durable. Whats another 20 or 30 feet on a hit anyway some of these bats are giving kids a false sense of power anyway i wish we would all go back to wood anyway.
I agree with putting a bat in their hands they have confidence in. But give me that extra 20 to 30 feet any day!!! Ask any golfer if they would buy another driver or set of irons if they could get another 20 to 30 yards out of it, they all would. Until they tell me we have to use wood I want the bat that gives my kid the most advantage possible.
Use to be that the bat companies only made one model in a -5. But over the last couple of years they have added more and more. The Demarini bats all hold up very well and have very good performance.
Our store carries several -5's. We have Easton both the metal and composite versions, the Miken with the longest sweet spot on the market and the Demarini and Worth -5.
We are currently having a bat sale and will discount 2010 bats for anyone who comes in and mentions NW GA website.
