My advice, save money on Speed and Agility and play basketball or another sport during the fall. If you ask Kennesaw State Baseball what the #1 thing they are looking for in baseball players it is "Athletes". So I have to agree with CaCO3 on this one.
So, Football started last week. It's going to be three days a week after school until school is out then 3 days a week having a morning workout from 7-10am, then back to after school training when school starts back up.
It's funny, when my son asked me "Is it going to be too much money for me to play football" I said "Nope, I was going to have to pay $300-$400 for speed and agility this summer anyway, now I don't have to, so really you are kind of saving me money". He told me that was a REALLY great way to look at it.
Football is the king of sports in the south. |

Punishers..ultimately it sounds like you are trying to offer high level competition to those who are looking for it and you have the kids best interest at heart...good luck! And Dansby Swanson is only 6'1" ft so there may be hope yet for those guys! |

The basketball team seems to have done well though.
They were 11-20.....Guess you need to add a question to your coach's questionnaire....What win-loss record do you consider as "doing well" in a season? |

Great call. The kids not making their JV team because they can't run a 7:30 mile or the 60 time is too high is insane. Who cares what a catcher or third baseman's time is in the mile. Full disclosure my son is "not fast".
Different note, I watched Moneyball again last night. That is a pretty good baseball movie. The starting rotation played a big role on that team and should have gotten a mention. |

Mike, the coach has to weed out the kids somehow. If you have 80 people show up for 40 spots wouldn't you want to weed out the non-athletes first?
A 60 time GREATLY determines if you can beat out a throw to first, or get to second on a well hit ball. 7:30 for a mile is actually a long time for an athlete. Most can run it under 6:00, and several are going to be under 5. When you get to High School it's suppose to be about the athletic kids.
There are ways for your son to increase his speed but if memory serves he hasn't hit his real growth spurt yet. That is when my son got his speed. |

Judging from many responses lately on this forum. The main questions that need to be asked before joining a travel ball team is:
1.) Do we have cookies and cream after the game? 2.) Is their a parent that frequently uses the phrase "It's alright Johnny, you just missed it, maybe next time" or some derivative of that phrase? 3.) Is it only just $4,000 per season? Not including uniform! Can I buy an extra jersey with my sons name on it? 4.) Can we play the most ever 4 day weekend tournaments? The workday baseball games keep the riffraff away from us elite people. 5.) How much entitlement attitude can Johnny get away with before we blame all his ills on the coach. 6.) What academy name are we renting with your fees? Its important for middle school recruiting that I play for the Premier Elite Showcase National Star Prospects Black brand. 7.) My commitment clock is running. I need to get committed for twitter press. My 13th birthday is coming soon.

I care about the 60 time for the middle of the field players not counting the catcher that makes 3 positions and backups at those positions. To cut players based on their mile time seems short sighted, you may miss a great player. I had typed out a much longer post but decided to use the much under utilized edit button.

As a kid the team mom would bring us a tray full of fountain Cokes from the concession stand after each game with a treat. Those were the days (before New Coke in case you were wondering).

Feel free to message me the longer version. I guess the distinction of who is short sighted depends on "what is a great player" to that coach. I think a coach would be wildly disappointed if the team had a hard time hitting in a game and then a kid got up, crushed the ball to the fence and could only make it to first base, and could not possibly steal second. |

Of course no matter what questions you ask you always have to assume they are all liars... I can point out an academy in Cobb County that advertise every year they have 36 open spots on their teams but they are really looking to get your tryout money... they are looking for 1 or 2, maybe.

There are some in Gwinnett that are popping up all over the place. I am against these big academy types in every way. They are nothing but money hogs and want money for every and any thing. |

This one came up in talking to a friend. IF your kid is older, say 13u/14u and he wants to play in high school and college you want to be at a park that has teams that are 16/17/18u. MANY parks/organizations pop up out of no where but they are ages 14u and below...they are not going to help your kid develop into a college player, or have contacts at colleges. |
