Gwinnett Punishers 10u Fall 2016 and Spring 2017
Gwinnett Punishers Baseball is a having tryouts for our 10u Major/AAA tournament team located in the Gwinnett-Lawrenceville area. We are the only Major level team in Gwinnett County. Partnered with the Phillips Baseball Center and many sponsors, our mission is to bring high-level Dominican baseball to the area with a different work ethic and playing style. If you have never seen Dominican baseball, you are in for a real treat.
This is a highly competitive fall and spring yearly team. This is a not a “Fun” team playing “Daddy Ball”. Tournaments are on weekends and practice twice a week, field and indoor with weekly scrimmages. Players will be playing multiple positions, must have great attitudes, good work ethic and not afraid to grind to become better. Real team culture.
Our goal is to provide superior player training to improve current playing skills and mental awareness. Creating true students of the game. Specialized training is available for all players (speed and agility, footwork, fielding, pitching, catching, throwing, and batting). Players will be challenged at the highest levels to push themselves to be better. Future of team is to become a showcase junior/senior team that will play and display skills in view of college and professional scouts. Players cannot turn 11 years old before May 1, 2017 to be eligible.
We have a flexible practice and training schedule with multiple team building events to include game footage days. Training is included. No extra or hidden costs to pay for training.
Professional level coaches that have played at D-1, MiLB, Dominican League, and MLB with a combined 15 years of coaching and playing experience. Head coach still trains and scouts current college and professional players. Outfielders are valued at this competition level.
Tryouts are scrimmage play style to give true evaluation. Individual Tryouts are available. Tryout Dates/Times and Location: TBD
Positions available: Catchers Pitchers In Fielders Out Fielders
Weekend Tournaments that we play (Order of importance): Perfect Game AAU USSSA Grand Slam Triple Crown
Q&A: (You will not get this detail for other coaches. They are looking for bodies)
Why Fall and Spring? A. Baseball is a commitment sport that requires lots of training. Although there are not as many teams in the Fall, we use the Fall play to establish and train players in game situations. Spring is when the competition comes to play and we will be more than ready for any team. Because of this we want to keep the same players from Fall and Spring together. So we fix the commitment to both seasons, not just one.
How many roster players? A. There will be 10 or 11 players on roster. We want all to have as many at-bats as possible and be able to give attention to every player to advance his current batting skillset.
Why Major level? A. In order to weed out playing daddy ball teams, we look for Major level tournaments and teams to play to challenge players. Although we do not control what level other teams claim to be, we will put in best effort to play competitive tournaments and teams. There may be tournaments we want to play in that only offer AAA level, hopefully the competition is stiff to challenge our boys. How does the batting order work? A. We use stats for our batting order. We look at batting average and on-base percentage per tournament to make the batting order for the next tournament. How does the pitching work? A. Pitching order is known before each game. There will be primary and backup pitchers assigned. Pitchers will be warmed up during batting in games to prevent injury. We train all players to be able to pitch with speed and control.
How does positioning work? A. Players will have primary and secondary positions, including pitching and catching. We rotate positions because we believe this method keeps the players engaged in the game while being able to play anywhere on the field. There are no fixed positions, but we will place the best players in the best positions when the game is on the line. Players are expected to be able to make plays in the positions they are assigned. If any player wants to try a different position we will make sure that player is trained-up and fundamentally sound to play that position in games.
Are there paid coaches? A. No paid coaches. So no limit on training. Coaches have jobs and their own businesses. Professional level training is included by actual baseball players not some wannabe dads watching MLB highlights on ESPN. Coaches attend and host coaching clinics to college and professional coaches. We even have a track coach that has competed at the D-1 and professionally to ensure that our players get faster running bases.
Do coaches have kids on team? A. Yes, the head coach has a lefty son that is a die-hard out-fielder that can pitch and play 1st base. Currently plays on a 10u Major team. Head coach has played professional baseball in the US and Dominican Republic where he experienced playing with some of the best players in the world that had little to no money and even less gear.
Is this a “Daddy Ball” team? A. NO! You can easily tell Daddy Ball teams by the level they play. A and AA teams are Daddy Ball teams, 4 dads = 4 players means no room for your player no matter how good he is, they are not looking to be or play competitive. Loosing is their norm. These teams exist because the dads want their kids to play an in-field position and tournaments want more money. They usually have a high turnover of players and become less of a team as games are played, just look at the one line posts of them looking for players. Most are park-associated teams that need bodies not players, not to mention the politics that go along with them.
Is this an “Academy” team? A. NO! We are not trying to fleece parents for money to train their young players. This is not a business. We will not sell you the “development” or “process” key words. This is just baseball business code for “you are ignorant fools, give us your money, your kid and STFU”. Ours answers are direct and to the point. All funds go to the team and tournaments. Our sponsors cover at minimum half of the costs. All parents pay the same amount, no pay for position play. Positions are earned. These so-called academies will usually have a former baseball player at some level that will sell you as if they will be involved, but you will end up with a clueless dad coaching and will end up experiencing “Daddy Ball” at it’s worst levels while your hard earned money goes to the nice facility and owners pockets. They will tell you that it doesn’t matter at this age. Wrong, this age establishes a solid foundation. Their grades and education work ethic do not matter at this age either if you believe that.
Do we coach and play to win? A. ABSOLUTELY!!!! We do not know any other way. Those who do not should play Rec. Parents are paying a lot of money for travel and results, not dads posting their own kids at 2nd base or shortstop who can not make routine plays and putting them at the top of the batting order who keep striking out. The fun is in winning and playing great baseball while establishing the work ethic needed to carry on to the next level in the future. We refuse to waste parents time and money on slick talk and poor results. Fun is what others say who were never competitive athletes and think just showing up is enough.
What is Dominican Baseball? A. Simply put, it is a lifestyle, a passion, and real love for game. Playing with accuracy, style, and precision while playing anyone/anywhere/anytime just because they can. Take a look at some of the MLB team rosters. Baseball is the Dominican national sport. They do not have the expensive gear or fancy uniforms and will still embarrass 99% of US teams.

Addendum:
We may play 11u or 12 u teams if the 10u bracket is not strong enough.
More about pitching. We will not leave a pitcher on the mound that is struggling and giving away runs. We have a 3 run rule for all pitchers in the game. Leaving a pitcher in the game giving away runs kills the moral of the team and makes it difficult because of the big hole that is dug. We understand that pitchers will have bad games, we just can not sacrifice the team while the pitcher is trying to work it out. The pros do not do it and neither will we.
Again, we want to make sure that we are very clear of how we run our club. |
