I remember when I was growing up, I played little league.........Not sure where they even play around here. It would be more exciting if 12yos could lead off the bases.....
As far as the age thing goes, they made it sound like a great idea.......not sure which is really better though |

About time! I have a son who has an August Birthday. When he was 6 years old no one thought about long term options we signed him up for the age group the May 1 cutoff told us he should have been in. That resulted in an 8th grader eligible to play 13u.
All kids with May 1- August 31 birthdays have the problem that they are not playing with their grade. I think that puts them at a disadvantage when it comes time for high school baseball. Much better to do the age cutoff by school grades, which the 8/31 cutoff would fix. |

The article says it's being phased in with kids who were born on or before August 31, 2005 not subject to the change until 2018. I assume that means that it will be implemented for younger kids before that.....? I hope our travel ball tourney companies wait the two years also - I really don't want my kid to miss his Cooperstown year next year. I'd rather he skip 13U......which I was probably going to have him do anyway.
Any idea when we might hear from USSSA/PG/TC? |

| does this help or make it worse?? Playing at 9U last year we found that a good number of teams had kids with Bdays post May 1st and were 4th graders already. |

My son is one that would definitely be affected by this decision with his summer birthday. I have kicked around the idea of playing him up. I was told by parents of older kids to just leave him where he is as it doesn’t really matter. A guy at our academy told me that unless he is hitting .700, leave him where he is at. My only concern would be him missing out on his Cooperstown year. Right now, he is 11u and in the 6th grade. If USSSA tried to move a year early, then he would miss Cooperstown.
I honestly would prefer my kid to play 14u during his 8th grade year. That way he is with the group that will all be moving to high school in the fall. Right now he is one of the older kids in his age group and one of the few in 6th grade. I think him playing 14u in 8th grade will better prepare him for high school. Personally, I’m more about pushing him ahead vs. holding back.

Wow, I could have written this two years ago! To your points ABC_Baseball:
1. When they make the switch it won't be immediate, it isn't going to happen until 2018. But also, most of us don't play LL and PG, TC and USSSA haven't mentioned following suit yet.
2. Cooperstown was VERY important for me so I let my August birthday kid play 12u as a 7th grader...in short he dominated (his OBP was over 0.700!) but that doesn't mean he learned. If I had to do it over again I likely would have played him at 12u when he was eligible for 11u....but then again my kid was an early bloomer, if your kid isn't then it may not be best for him.
3. I had my son skip over 13u and right into 14u, he just turned 13 in August and he's in 8th grade. He hasn't had a problem yet other than no one knows him in this age group or what he can do, he has to prove himself all over again, which isn't really a bad thing.
This is what worked for my kid, he is 5'9 and 160#'s...and just turned 13, but it may not work for yours, just wanted to share my perspective from two years down the road. |
