| What is a reasonable amount of time one should have to wait to hear if they make a HS age team after attending an August showcase/tryout hosted by an org who selects summer teams from attendees? Two weeks, two months, Christmas? |

| I'm being told we may not hear anything until November. This is from two separate organizations. Seems like a long time but I'm sure they have their reasons. |

| Seems you are being strung along. I am sure 13 to 14 players knew they made each team within 2 days. |

Are they selecting the team based on a single event, or are they hosting multiple tryouts across a larger territory? If the latter, then it makes sense that they'd try and get commitments from the top players from the first event, keep their second and third choices on hold and see what they get from their other tryout/showcases. If they have 20 spots to fill, they may look to try and get the top 3-5 from each event, then fill the remainder from the top remaining players across all the event.
Just a stab in the dark, but if they're saying November, and you know they're hosting multiple events, makes sense. If they had one event and are telling you November, then I agree with mdschert. They're stringing you out and I'd seek other options in the meantime. |

| I should know about being strung along. My son was on a well known academy team and right after the season my son was notified before tryouts that he made a fall team. Only one player from his entire team was notified that he made the team right after tryouts. I thought my son would make the team because he had a great season the year before and was flawless in tryouts and played really well on their fall team. Well, 2 days after uniform fitting and check cashed, my son was notified that he did not make the roster. They were going to try to form another team but no promises. I lost half my uniform money because of restocking fees. |

I would say a reasonable amount of time would be no more than a week. Even a couple days, assuming the tryout you attended is their only one. Anything more than that, they are stringing you along waiting for their first choices to respond, or they are feeling pretty confident that they can find someone better than your son. In other words, your son is not one of their first choices. If that is the case, and it surely is, you don't want to be on that team because it means you will be at the bottom of their depth chart. If I were you, I would keep looking and find a team that wants your son, not a team that is just stringing you along in case they can't find a better player.
My son really only tried out for two teams. And they were both at 17. All the other teams he played on, he was invited to play. Both those teams offered him a spot within a day or so. On the team he wound up playing on, an academy team, I called the coach the next day to ask a question about fees. He told me right off the bat, that he was glad I called, he was going to call me to let me know my son made the team. That was the day after the tryout.
Believe me, when these teams see a player they REALLY want, they jump on him. If it takes longer than a couple of days, you are not their first choice. Find a team that wants your son. Maybe where he wouldn't be the #1 player on the team, but a team that values his skills. You really don't want to be #15 or #16 on the depth chart. It will be a hard row to hoe getting a lot of play time... |

| Ditto to bballman. After the notification my son tried out for another well known academy team and was offered a position on the spot. He had a great season, started all season and batted third slot, also made PG WWBA all tournament team. Realized later that the previous team made their selections and commitment immediately after tryouts and strung my son along until after uniform fitting. What puzzles me to this day is that the academy let an entire team go. All players were willing to stay another season. They were a solid major team with some really good wins against tough competition. |

Appreciate all the input. Both organizations were doing a single showcase/tryout and the turnout was considerable. Say 50 kids in each graduating class. One of the organizations made my son a fall only offer while stating they would let us know later (approx. 2 weeks) about summer teams which would not be affected by accepting/declining the fall offer. We declined the fall offer for numerous conflicts. The only thing I've heard since then it would be Nov when summer team information would be sent. So they changed the date when summer teams would be named to after the fall season. Playing in the fall could have strengthened my son's chances but the decision to not play had already been made with the information at hand.
The second organization hasn't contacted us yet. It's been a little over a week. A friend whose son played last year, and will positively be asked back, hasn't heard anything either. I just spoke to another friend who tells me his kid was offered a spot 8 weeks after tryouts last year and not to expect anything for a while.
So it seems some organizations slow roll constructing their teams. Regardless, we are pursuing other organizations and looking for the right fit. |
