Does anyone know of a good weight training circuit for 14 yr old baseball players? Anything that can be accessed online? I am assuming there are some types of lifting you want to avoid for baseball.

My 14 year old uses this workout and it has worked very well. We were turned on to this by a few big league pitchers that I know and also use this program.

Problem: Baseball pitchers need to
exercise in the off-season.

Solution: Now you can quickly and
easily develop more explosive power
and stamina while building a
stronger arm, improving flexibility
and reducing the risk of throwing
arm injuries.

Take the guesswork out of your
training program and apply the
same functional training and
conditioning plan that big league
pitchers are now using to to get
bigger, faster and stronger.

I agree with Goyard that you should read the August discussion

I would avoid any type of squatting with weights, any type of Cleans with weights, any bench presses where you bring the elbows below the shoulder line. I would also avoid any type of static stretching.

To complicate matters for parernts and coaches, the traditional baseball community finally understands the importance of Specificity in Treaining. So every promotional blurb uses the words Functional, Specific, etc. Then they proceed to show you drills that have nothing to do with nothing.

Given the disaster this year was for Major League pitchers, I would not reco anything they are doing.

I recommend your son do this 60 Day program if he is sufficiently dedicated:

He can't be competeing while he is doing this training

Good luck,

RJ,

I don't have a specific on-line program although I'm sure there are plenty you can buy. I know there is some concern about teenage weight training. Having been down this road with my now 17 yr. old H.S. player, I recommend reading the book "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" -- The proven system for building athletes. By Dr. Greg Shepard, EdD.

His "BFS" system has been used by over 9000 High schools for all sports and all athletes. I'm for "specificity of training" to improve skills. However, that being said, stronger, faster athletes, with the same skill sets, are better than weaker, slower ones! The best exercises for conditioning all athletes to perform better are multi-joint moves; squat, bench and power clean! Some other auxilary stuff can be added, but aren't necessary.

His high school and most schools with successful athletic programs, employ weight, speed and agility training for every major sport! My son's H.S. formal off-season baseball training program began Sep 1st and requires (4) baseball specific weight training sessions a week (at 6:15am) and (2) afternoon speed & agility sessions that will continue until the February tryouts and season start. Then a scaled down, in season, program is continued. The programs were designed by the Strength and Conditioning Staff working with the Coach of each sport. Progress is monitored and results tracked. A certified Staff member is always present. If a player doesn't meet the mandatory minimum workouts, he won't have much chance of playing. I can tell you, first hand, the results are phenominal and the proof is in the number of Play-off and State Final appearances! Additionally, we've had no weight room injuries or on field conditioning related injuries.

I think you are on the right track for your son. Good Training!

PRONATE: What does Doc say about on-going WW & IB training during the season after the initial H.S. 120 day program is completed?

I saw that in his Q&A somewhere, long ago, and can't put my eyes on it. It seems logical that a scaled down program would be on-going?

Thanks,
E.

Mechanic and others:

Can you post some of the baseball specific weight and running exercises these kids are doing? Are they having the kids do more than one set per muscle group?

How do you know one has been injured? A local football "star" and an up and coming 14 year old baseball player tell me their knees are killing them. I say its from the squatting with weights. What I do know is they don't say anything to their coaches. I can assure you their fathers would tell you their instructors are "certified"

What is the thought on these kids working out so early in the morning? Why can't they do these workouts after school? Are these kids in bed by 9PM so they can get enough sleep?

What is the thought on the mandatory nature of these "voluntary" workouts?

When you complete Dr Marshall's programs you then go to one half the base repetitions. In this case it would be one half of 48. 24

I am pleased your son and his team are doing well.
