Joe,
My son is about the same size @ 12U. Last year he used a Catalyst -10 with great success. Because of my experience with my older boy having difficulty transitioning to the heavier bats @ 13U & 14U we dicided to go with a -8 Dimarini CF3. Next year we go to -5 and at 14U to a -3.
I think the Dimarini's are the best bats on the market. They're durable and have plenty of pop. I like the CF3 the best but my sons like the voodoo as well. You may want to consider.

Joe,
My 11 year old son (plays 12U) is 5'7" and about 125 pounds. He recently moved up from a Catalyst 31/21 to the DeMarini CF3 32/24 as well. Simply put...this bat is one of the best on the market, but it does take a bit of time to get used to the difference in the drop which is why we made the switch in the off season. The main reason being that I didn't want him to get frustrated while adjusting to the change in weight during the middle of the spring season. My only suggestion is that if you get it make sure you put in the appropriate cage time so that your son can gradually adjust to any change in length and weight. You may find that he takes a step or two backward in order to go forward with this bat. I also purchased a Nokona Bratt Bat http://www.nokona.com/as a training aid which seems to be helping.
Good Luck! |

Get a year old model in a weight and length he can contol. Kids will be drawn to graphics and with the level of engineering that goes into the bats from Louisville, Easton and DeMarini, they're all probably a wash as performance goes. The Worth bats and some of the Rawlings bats have a reputation for denting, but the seem to back up their warranties. If you buy a year or two old bat, that's new and not used, you can save some significant bucks. One last thought is to go to a store that caters to baseball. In my area Jonquil, Kesslers and Better Baseball have tons of bats. You can compare the balance and feel of different bats to get one that feels good in your son's hands. Bats that are the same length and weight feel different because their weight is distributed differently along the lenght of the bat. This changes the feel of the bat greatly when the kid swings. Experiment for yourself. You'll be surprised.

Worth does back up the product...to a point. With the Prodigy, you have a year to return it (with original paperwork), but if it dents again, which it will, you have to return it within a month of receiving the replacement. After that, you're out of luck. |
