Just heard on The Heard that Travel Baseball is ruining kids arms with too many games. One MLB pitcher said that kids arms need rest like MLB pitchers arms do. Also said kids need to play other sports. Says most parents are doing this trying to get their son a scholorship to go to college.......

Agreed. There's too many dads pushing their kid to continue to play ball. It's all to often the case of the dad living through their kid. It's time to remember that they are kids, give them a break!

Could part also be on the coaches for pushing players to play fall baseball?? My sons play multiple sports so I don't really worry about them getting away from baseball till Jan workouts.....

I've hear it plenty too... But never, EVER have a heard what the appropriate amount is, for a kid to pitch... Pitch count must, and should be monitored by the coach (assuming he's ethical), and even the parents. What I've heard a LOT of pitchers, from days gone by, say is the rest in-between starts or uses. Some preach use them ONCE a weekend, others say a min. of 1 or 2 days 'rest' in between.

The opposite side of the coin is this... A close friend of mine (D1 scholarshiped pitcher, Minor league for a couple of years) Said he pitched a TON when he was 7-14 years old. Would throw complete games at 7-10 yrs old in rec/all-stars and every years of travel (assuming 5-7 innings per start). Pitch count wasn't talked about. Only innings per week back then (late '80's). He is a firm believer if he didn't throw as much while younger, building strength and conditioning his arm, he wouldn't have gone as far as he did.

What constitutes too many games? MLB teams play 162 games per year over 7 months. Travel ball you play about 60 games over 4 months...I'm not counting the random Sunday only tourney's in the fall. And most tournaments have specific rules on not over pitching the kids...who also only have 7 inning games until after 14u.

Did they give examples of what would be acceptable rest times?

This is what my son's doc recommended at 12U.

75 per game max
66 or more 4 days rest
51-65 3 days rest
36-50 2 days rest
21-35 1 day rest
1-20 no day rest

I am curious to know the correlation, if any to throwing sliders at the next level and the rash of TJ surgeries? I don't know the % of HS kids throwing them but i know in D1 they are very good to have in the arsenal and seem to be the pitch of favor at the moment.

Not saying throwing breaking balls(sliders, curve and the almighty GYRO) are not adding to arm injuries, I think overuse and pitching while fatigued are the biggest factors.
