We all tend to get a little crazy this time of year…call it what you may…is it the heat, the travel, practice schedules, school almost out craziness, or is the whisperings of silly season starting up already???

This year has been quite a learning experience for our kid, and even more so for us as parents. I have to stop and think, at the end of the day, is it really all worth it? To have your kids total highs, taken to their lowest lows, all because of one or two bad games. Maybe, maybe not. We all have them, right? I guess it really depends on the day.

I met up with an old childhood friend this week whose son started travel ball at 9. He was on the fast track to a scholarship. This kid did the whole ECB thing, was on one of the top teams there, only to have it all taken away when his arm was ruined by all that pitching at 14/15 yo. We all hear about it…we all think it won’t happen to our kid, then you hear a story like this that really has me asking….what are we doing to our kids just so we win? Is it for our kids…or is it for us. My point of this post is mainly just saying to all you parents and coaches out there…think about the best interest for your kid, your players, and your team! This is just a milestone in their lives…yes I believe it shapes them in who they become, but it can also ruin them if done incorrectly. At the end of the day, it should be about making memories, making friends, and life lessons learned. Yes, I believe being competitive and learning from wins and losses are important life lessons, but we should really think about the price we are paying….and I’m not talking $$$. At the end of the day, they are only 10!!!

Enjoy the rest of your season!
