| My son sprouted up a little over the summer. He is using a -5 in travel and a BBCOR in middle school. It is time for a new bat or bats. Should I come off the $$$ and buy two bats or just buy one BBCOR and have him use it in both leagues? |

the hottest bat out there right now is the XL1 BBCoR or -5....a lot of pop!! |

These bat makers have everyone hook line and sinker. It is the opposite of;
Charge a hose: To make water pressure available on a hose in final preparation for its use. This is done on the scene after the hose is deployed.
The bat does not make hill of beans difference. It is the players preparation which is nutrition, at this age natural strength exercise like push-ups dips etc, mental attitude an proper sleep, cross training, and playing multiple sports. My grand kiddos do yoga and it has made them stronger and sleeked out their muscle. Also it helps to prevent injuries.
In short POP comes from the above. A bat may give you five yards more if the bat maker broke the standards. |

| I agree with you to some extent captain. I still play softball and some of the bats out there will add 30-50 feet or more. |

| This has been something that we have talked about a lot with our travel coach. I consulted my older sons HS coach also. They should all be swinging drop 3 bats now at 14, either 31 or 32 length and not end loaded. The Easton Mako and S1 are both good, balanced bats. My son is still swinging a 31 Easton XL1 BBCOR, which is end loaded. We are going to buy a 32 Mako or S1 in the next 2 weeks and transition to that as soon as possible. |

| You should make the decision based on what will make him better prepared for high school ball. Middle school ball is a waste of time. Your son won't benefit from it at all. It will just take up extra time. Better to focus on travel ball and school. |

| I couldnt disagree with you more. Middle School is not a waste of time (to him). He may not get the best coaching or instruction but he gets pride for playing for his school. |

A waste of time? Middle School ball is a great way to prepare young players who plan to play in their High School program. Learning to prep a field, have a coach actually check your GPA, finally getting your parents to sit down and leave you alone while you play ball (the list does go on). Not to mention the best part which IS the pride of representing your school. MS ball is a short season which really doesn't interfere with travel and helps provide practice and reps during a somewhat down-time of the year. Granted, the schedule is weak but I think the experience is awesome for these young players especially if you're blessed to play in a strong feeder program with good coaches.

| School pride in public MS? Maybe in the private schools that is a true statement. Kids can't attend travel workouts, MS practice, play games and get schoolwork done. That doesn't even include them having a social life. Public MS has poor coaching and competition. If you miss even a travel workout a few times a month for that, it's a bad choice. I'm only talking about it from the aspect of the kids getting better. You can make a valid argument that they are having fun out there, but not that they are improving their baseball skills. If they are doing it for girls attention, their careers are already doomed. |

| You (rdtd40) are absolutley wrong. Kids can have pride playing for their middle school team, private or public. My son did just fine last year with middle school practice/games, travel ball practice/games, social life and making the A/B honor roll. If my son likes girls attention in the 8th grade, I hardly doubt his career is doomed. |

(rdtd40) I'm sure you have a personal experience or a really close friend which helped you form your opinion which I respect. As for my MS player, he has time to be an AP Honors student, play MS ball, receive both pitching/hitting lessons once a week, private cage work, very active social life, travel and take out the trash(always under ptotest). Everyone's athletic program, travel experience, etc is different, but let's please don't condemn MS ball as a whole because I assure you there are good one's out there. Girl's, career, doomed (really?) I may have to ask my Son's girlfriend to stay away from the ballpark...

Not saying it is the same everywhere but my son's MS teams were coached by dads/volunteers so the argument that it keeps the parents out does not necessarily apply. I also noticed that a majority of the kids that played MS ball last season did not make the JV team this year due to most of the travel players not participating in the MS program so the pride aspect was probably greatly diminished for many.
There is no perfect scenario for everyone. Just go with what is best for your situation and enjoy the moments as they come. |
