Hi Bball moms!!
This is our first year on travel and our son has been invited to be on a team but they are asking for $2300 for down payment plus monthly dues from August-July 2014. Is that reasonable, or are we being taken advantage of? Thanks so much for your help!

That depends on what you are getting for the money, age of player, whether that is affordable to you and if you are willing to pay it. For our family, that is not an amount we'd be willing to pay.

Seems a bit high, especially if monthly dues are required on top of the $2300.

Some questions to consider:
What age group?
How many on the roster?
Does the team have a practice field? (probably some costs here)
How many tournaments are they going to enter?
Will they require additional fees for batting cage time? (i.e. winter workouts)
Will the team manager provide a budget to the parents? (they should)
Does that cost include uniforms?

Costs per tournament average (on the high side - depends on age) $600 per team. Then uniforms can run $150-$300 - depending on the options and how nice they are. There could then be costs for field rental (practice) and paid coaches if applicable. Not a lot of costs outside of that. Based on some of the answers above, you could determine the overall team estimated expenses, and then see how that shakes out.

My son has been playing travel ball for 6 years and we have never been asked to make a large down payment! We have always made monthly payments, usually August through April to pay the balance in full. We have played with some smaller teams and also with the large organizations. I would definitely question why they need that much money up front.
Also, I have heard some terrible stories where the coach steals the money and you never see it again! So, please question the coach about this before handing them this large of a check. I would hate for you to be taken advantage of.

Sorry everyone! The initial investment is $500 and $150/mo. for the year to equal out to the $2300. Is that reasonable?

That sounds within the average I have heard. You still want to see a budget to see where the funds go.
