As this spring season winds down I'm being put in a spot where it may be in my son's best interest to start something new. It is less about his skill level, he's always played up and performed at a fairly high level. It is more a function of his age and maturity, he is one week short of being able to play 9u this year and is playing on an 11u team. There have been several times where his immaturity has shown up and several more times where the middle school boys were discussing things that are way above his Pokemon level. As a parent, I don't know if he's ready to spend another year with kids that will be hitting puberty, shaving, and just being big (I'm sure a lot of this is just me hoping he will stay little forever).
So to those of you that branched out and started something new, what kind of advice can you give me?
I've been recruiting, budgeting, planning, and most importantly praying...but I obviously don't know enough to not know what I don't know.
Thanks |

Why do you need to start something new? Why not just drop down and replay 11's next year on an established team/program that will be on par with your son's skill level?
It would be much easier and probably a lot better for your son. If you start from scratch, you're going to have your hands full and may be more focused on all the things surrounding the game OTHER than baseball. |

Oh I wish it were that easy. I live in Athens and it is really not a very good baseball town (our two public high schools combined to win like 3 games this year). We have always played one town over but even out there, his age group is just really thin. In order to get enough kids, the correct age, together I have to get out to the surrounding counties and pull 2 from here, 3 from there, etc. |

Have you looked at some of the 10 Maj and 10 AAA that will be moving up this year? Looking at the U-Trip team rankings, there are several between Athens, Conyers, and Covington. You might reach out to some of those managers and talk.
If you're willing to go as far as Conyers, I can put you in touch with the Rhinos manager (ex-MLB pitcher, school teacher, very good with kids). |

We played last fall with the Walton Warriors and I know a lot of those kids/parents/coaches over in that area. The problem arises in that my ex wife and I both work and my job is in Elberton. She doesn't get off from work until 5 and by the time she would get him at school and try to get to Criswell to practice it was 6:30 at the earliest. It is just a ton to ask of her to do that kind of taxi service two or three times a week. |

FWIW, there are usually a lot of good ball players between Madison, Franklin and Hart counties (the Ty Cobb triangle), each of which have good youth programs. It might be late to scout the local talent, but I would start there, getting in touch with allstar coaches and/or taking in some of the district tournaments coming up.
Another tip for reading material would be "Travelball" by Ron Filipkowski. |

We have already been in the area. We have a pretty good core of kids already and most of them are from the madison/franklin areas.
I'll have to take a look at that book. Thanks |

I put together my team at 11, and weve been going strong for four years. The main thing to focus on is your focus :-) winning or development or a mixture of both. My recommendation is to find a kid who plays every position to give you a starting 8, then add another catcher, 2 utility and one kid who mainly pitches and plays one other pos. From there you can build an offensive lineup and a strong defense. You will have enough players to rotate yet everyone will get ample playing time. You will need at least 5-6 pitchers. Once you build your program, you will pick up/lose players but will have something special.
Its not that hard to do, any help I can offer, drop me a line. |

If you live in Athens, why don't you try Team Elite in Winder, that's only about 15-20 minutes from your house. |

Prayer is a huge part of anything we do in life. My husband Jim and I have found that God used the passions in our children's lives to grow them up. I can honestly say he has used this sports to refine ours as well. We have five children. All were and continue to be tremendously competitive. Two of our sons have played professional ball , one still is in the game. From the beginning those boys had a passion for the game. As parents it was our responsibility to teach them that no sport, no coach or anything else defined them . Only their Creator. In other words they played for the audience of One. Silencing voices that are always going against that is the key to living a free life. Anyway as to starting something new if you are led go do it. We are three years into developing our Travel Ball program. We believe you don't coach baseball but baseball players. If you would like more information you can go to theozonesi.com. If we can be of any help you are welcome to email me at daniseowings@gmail.com |
