I recently witnessed a game where the call was questionable and not only the coach ran out on the field to yell at the umpire, but 5-6 team members did, as well. I have never seen such disrespect for an umpire coming from players. Coaches, I would hope that you are teaching your boys to be young MEN - to show respect, to learn discipline and to know when to let the appropriate person handle a situation.

It's not only disrespectful, it's stupid if you want any chance of a future close call to go your way.

That's not good, what age group?? Coach was lucky if he wasn't tossed.

That is awful to hear. What age group?? I am tired of seeing this constant arguing by anyone other than the head coach. Because in reality all you are arguing for is a makeup call or a break some where else in the game. Most umpires don't change their call and rarely does another umpire change the call. So talk calmly and explain your side, listen and then get back to the game. Show your players how it is done. Move on!!!! It is hard to explain to a kid why he should move on, when the coaches argue and complain for ten minutes about a call that for most games is not even a factor.

Ha Ha Ha, you're all funny.
The next bad call you are the victim of you will all go against what you posted and make noise about it.
I always enjoy posts from bizzaro world because these things never happen in reality.............

Agree with BigWhiteVan. When I coached, I always explained to the kids that calls don't always go our way, but seem to even out over the season. That there is NO reason to ever argue with an umpire. I have walked out to have a discussion with them if I was seeing discrepancies in the strike zone, etc.

A couple of weeks ago our team was leading by 13 in the 4th inning and the strike zone suddenly got bigger. Coach talked to the umpire and the umpire said he was simply trying to move the game along. We just told the kids to swing at everything.

It's rare that I've ever seen an umpire change a call (it does happen occasionally), but most I know will somehow work in a makeup call if they know they blew one.

It does not surprise me.... I actually had a 12y/o purposely push me/run into me and chew me out after a game as he was walking off the field.. I have had players purposely throw balls at as during warm ups, been hit in the head, shoulder, thigh with "errant" throws during warm ups.... so coaches and kids running onto the field is no surprise.

I watched a 13 year old batter take off his helmet and argue with the home plate umpire after his team mate was called out stealing third. Our coach would have sat the kid. Instead, he came out a few minutes later to catch. If I had been that ump, I would not have called much of anything a strike that half inning. (He was more professional then I would have been.)

Ex ---- I don't mean you can't argue a call, show some emotion about a blown call or approach an umpire in an upset manner. BUT let it be the HEAD coach first of all. Secondly argue what you will but if you keep grumbling then you are hurting YOUR team. This is no different then a kid letting one error turn into three. Your reaction is hard for me to take. The idea that you have to create an adversary with the umpire is just a wrong way to look at it. The game has an opponent. Why make another one??? Some coaches use this to fire up their kids. Sometimes it works, but at what cost. And believe me I completely understand that sometimes the coaches know more about the rules than the umpires, but it still doesn't make it right to be a jerk about it 15-30 minutes later. That just opens the door for an excuse (whether it be the coaches, kids, parents or all three). When, like said earlier, most times it becomes insignificant in the end result of the game, anyway. And your comment to me comes across as justified. Like the umpire did it personally against you, so that NOW it is somehow ok. Or just to hard to control your actions. To me it should be stopped. It is hard enough for the umpire to control some parents who forget they are SPECTATORS, not participants. Now they have to worry about gaining control of an overly irate coach and kids who may have these umpires later.

That kid would have been tossed or cut off before he got past the first verb in his argument if I was the umpire, especially if I knew he was the catcher.

I have seen some really terrible umpiring over the years, but even taking that into account, the number of coaches I've known who knew the rules better than even the average umpires is very tiny.

As an ex-division1 official, here is the way this was addressed by NCAA conference supervisors. There are two kinds of people at the game, non-paying people - players and coaches, an paying people- fans an parents . The non-paying people can't say much but the paying people are free to say whatever The official may be subject to dome rough comments but remember who paid to get in, who didn't an who is GETTING PAID. Bottom line if the official is right than it becomes not much of a controversy. Work hard to get into a good position to make the call an get the play right thats what you get paid to do an the rest will take care of itself.

I like that...I don't really believe the umpires should be able to say anything to the fans. They knew what they were getting into when they took the job. Can't handle the heat don't stand in a frying pan!!!

I'm not sure where these officials are located, but the Atlanta area has some %100 pitiful umpires. We have had some absolute madness in the last few years. Runners at 1st and 3rd, infield fly still applies apparently. Had an official tell our coaches "I don't like courtesy runners"... My favorite play of all time was having an umpire behind the plate who was EMPLOYED by the opposing teams park. End of the game runners on 1st and 3rd 2 outs. We are in the field, our SS takes a ground ball throws to first field umpire says out and we are the winner. Then all of a sudden the home plate umpire runs down and says safe(no meeting between the umpires) one of our coaches ask "if you were watching first who was making sure the runner on 3rd touched the plate?" No response....we lost. Those situations are pitiful and unacceptable. We appreciate umpires like Chris whenever we get one. But umpires shouldn't be beyond approach and they dang sure shouldn't be beyond discipline when they blow call after call or have no clue of the rules. There will always be a human element but having poor knowledge of the rules is unacceptable.
