I have a question. If a kid is ahead in school by a grade, should he play his grade level or actual age level? It seems to me if he is talented enough he could play with his grade, but I know some elite teams play up with the older age groups.

You want your son to play with his grade appropriate group. College coaches are always scouting 17U which are juniors.
No value to playing down.

It depends on child and situation. There is value in playing "down". When you find a team at age level that is above your child's skill level then this is a good fit. When the best coaching is found at age level then this is a good fit. When your child needs improvement while excelling then this is a good fit. On the other hand if none of this is the case, then play grade level. Find a team where he can practice AND play. Nothing teaches like game experience. The GAME is about fun first. Most kids learn and are at their best when they are having a good time. All kids are different. Now, when you reach high school age, you need to be at your grade level for the exposure to future opportunities. More time in the view so to speak. I don't believe there is a generic formula for every kid. It is a journey that should be enjoyed just as much as the destination. Both by the kid and the parent. Just my double lincolns.

I've never had a college coach ask me, "what age team is player on." They only care about when the kid graduates. Play with the best fit for your kid. including, coaches that will work with and for your kid. Teammates, etc
