This is the new way of making a lot of money in a weekend. Some will dress it up as a "clinic". Yes i can see maybe a nominal fee but some places are charging $75 to $100 when they know **** well who most of the kids they are going to keep will be. Do they charge the returning players who may or may not show up? do they claim no one is guaranteed a spot but let them not show up? do they then let people come in after tryouts for free and get a spot? Its ok to be wasting your money if you know you are and have plenty of it. truth is if some stud shows up after you have paid to tryout they will take him mid season or prior to games starting and never charge that. Coaches have found a gold mine in the state of GA and mine it every single chance they get.

Teddy,
This has been beaten to death here in other posts. But you are right. Never think any tryout is "open" and all slots are available, thats simply not true. No matter how much the two major academys here in the local area say they are, one claiming all 36 spots were open for his 3 12U teams, they are not.
I watched 3 returning players have just the most awful tryouts, no hustle, didn't hit a ball, ran much slower than others, missed grounders, etc, but all three made it back on the team. Why? Because the coaches have 2 years of day to day knowledge on how well those kids normally play and what the families are like and how they will gel with the others compared to the new kid they have 4 hours of knowledge on from a tryout.
I'm sorry but everyone who just went through silly season thinking these major teams had multiple openings and they actually had a shot were delusional.
So, how do you make those teams? The coach has to know you from having played against you. If the coach remembers your pitching, speed, hitting then he will call you before the supposed "open" tryouts and discuss it with you.
How do I know? Thats how my son got picked. Several times.
As far as paying the fee- It, unfortunately, has become a way of life now and accepted. Just like gas will NEVER go below $2.50/gal ever again-we've gotten used to paying it so why would "they" lower the price?
At ECB everyone, even returning players, pay the fee whether they go to tryouts or not. I believe it is the same at 643. I don't know about the others or at rec parks.

Organizations will tell you that ALL players must pay the tryout fee. It is not true at all.

My understanding (perhaps wrong) is that the word "open" in the phrase open tryout or open evaluation merely means it is open to anyone who wants to attend (or who will pay the money to attend), not that all roster positions are open.

As for paying for tryouts, we've only done that once -- this year for 6-4-3. I could tell that the organization was sensitive to complaints about this and tried very hard to give everyone who attended their money's worth. We certainly left feeling that way. A lot of staff, as well as coaches from other 6-4-3 teams, were there working with the kids in small groups. It was very instructional and postive. I also felt like they got a good look at my son. Even though he did not get an offer, we still feel good about having attended.

Not sure if other organizations would go to such trouble, and I'd hesitate to pay a big fee for a run-of-the-mill tryout unless I was pretty sure we had an offer coming.

Agree with you 4bagger except that at 12U tryout, players were to arrive between 11 am and noon. Many did not finish until after 10 pm. 10+ hours?

How many actual spots do you think were open before the tryouts were held fo all 3 teams? I think the honest answer is 8 or 9 with the 3rd team pretty much already set for the 1 to 9 spots with kids brought over from another program.

All spots were open to any kid that WAS BETTER OR HAD MORE POTENTIAL TO BE BETTER. That is just the way it is one must realize that with that level of instruction already taught for kids on weekly basis each year becomes more difficult to earn a spot. The reason i know this to be true is one already top ranked team who won at the highest level to play had 4 kids that were cut of the team. Most impressive part of this is that the kids stayed with same organization after being cut. Some kids develope faster some slower from year to year. Things happen for a reason and sometimes in hind sight it becomes clear. Sometimes the best at 10 are not the best at 12 and so on. I would be willing to bet the parents of those kids that were cut are first class people who understand that today is not near as important as tomorrow.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that some kids that made certain organizational teams were not the best at the tryout at this age now in the past nor in the future.

bkball I can also guarantee they were not present at the very very very long tryout the other kids were. It's all who you know. Ban private tryouts. My kid wants to see how good he is next to your elite kid.
