Performance first and foremost coupled with coachable and being a good teammate.
I think there are probably some elite players that aren't realized playing in lower than Major levels, but for whatever reasons (financial, drive time, etc..) cannot be realized. I know there are plenty of elite players out in this area, but they will surface more when they get a bit older. Right now they are still kids. In a few years they will become young men and hair and deeper voices along with focus and being competitive will kick in big time. Right now though, some of us would like to think that we have the next Chipper Jones in our family, but they are a long way from that at this age. |

There are two qualifications:
1. Your player is undeniably gifted (uncommon).
or
2. You (as a totally unbiased parent) decide he is "elite", and you start referring to him as such (very common)  |

| You will be suprised how it is gonna change over the next several years. The kids that you have seen dominating at early ages are usually a little more physically gifted and my be deeper into puberty, but you will see some serious changes with other kids. What is the funniest, is that chubby kid at 10 and 11, then you see him at 15 and he is this fast super athelete. |

This should be an interesting discussion. I would expect an 'elite' player to physically/mentally dominate most others kids at his age group. I.E. better/harder hits, stronger arm, great speed, high baseball IQ, etc.

| Usually at this age players are referred to as "elite" if the are a dominant pitcher or Homerun hitter. I believe this will change very quickly and as the get older they will have to possess more than one "tool". |

I could have taken a team kids that were "better" than my son at 12 and aren't playing now and done some serious damage at Cooperstown.
Some didn't make their high school teams and stopped playing. Some stopped playing on their own.
I guess my point is, at 11 and 12, it doesn't matter. Nobody really cares who won Cooperstown in 2007 except the teams that did. Ditto the Elite 32, Triple Crown Nationals, etc., etc. Enjoy the ride as long as it lasts and don't worry about the petty stuff. It will help prepare you for HS as well. |

| AllStar, I agree with your points, but most do what we do because they are only going to be this age once and eventually will leave the nest. If your kids love sports, I think it is one of the best avenues to have fun and learn a lot of life lessons while still being able to hang with your kid. Like I have always said, to each his own in life and with their kids. Whether they are playing at 5 or 18, if they let you hang with them without saying it is not cool, enjoy it and hang on to them as long as you can:) |
