Tying runner on 3B one out. Batter hits hard grounder to short that tajes a bad hop and hits SS in the face. Runner on third scores. Batter safe at first. Umpire throws his hands up and calls dead ball bc the SS has taken a ball to the face. Runner still safe at first but the kid who scored is made to go back to third?!

16u tournament game. GSA in Austell. Terrible.

Tough...tough....tough....situation. Player saftey is paramount and to call this a terrible call is a stretch. Perhaps in this siutation the run could/should have scored since he killed the play. But you can't fault blue 100% on this one. I can guarantee had he scored R3, someone would be complaining about that, or about the fact he killed the play. I was taught kill the play and deal with the runners later.

Chalk this one up to a tough break, but not necessarily a terrible call.

Totally agree with Chris. Safety trumps "play" in youth IMHO. Even at 16u. If contact occurs at the neck or above, play will typically be stopped.

You didn't state WHEN the umpire called the ball dead. Was the runner already headed home? More than half way? To me this is important as to where runners should be placed at the time play was stopped.

Either way, I agree with Chris, more a bad break than a bad call.

I think its a terrible call. The 3B or pitcher should have run over and grabbed the ball and stopped the runners, then time should have been immediately called and the player tended to. The reason I think its a terrible call is that if the runner going home or to first tripped and injured an ankle, no time is going to be called, they are simply going to be tagged out and then they can be helped off the field afterwards.

If its good for the offense, its good for the defense.

That is absolutely a horrible call. I agree safety first and time should have been called to check on the player. But you also have to give each runner one base with this. The runner at third is going to score if the bad hops hits him somewhere else or jumps over his head. Offense can't be penalized for where the ball hits him. Now if a runner scored from 2nd on that play then I am fine with that runner being brought back to 3rd. If the bases were loaded then umpire has no other choice but to allow him to score. Why should he not score just because other runners were not on base.

See 2012 NFHS rule 6.1 sec 2 article d. "Time shall be called by the umpire and the play is suspended when: an umpire or player is incapacitated, except when that if the injury occurs during a live ball, time shall not be called until no further advance or put out is possible".

Blue should have waited until play is complete then killed it
