Just wanted to drop a quick line and wish all of the players (and parents) the best of luck in the upcoming High School tryouts. In some demented way, I actually enjoy the tryout period (aka, the "silly season"). All of the speculation..the trying to guess what the coaches are thinking...wondering when the results will be posted...it's gut wrenching and somehow fun at the same time..or maybe its just me.....

Well what I always liked about the high school setup is that largely its uncontrolled by parents lobbying , bribing , you name it, that happens a so much with the travel teams
Yea I know some high school coaches are receptive to lobbying desperate parents or to receiving some sort of 'compensation 'for allowing the kid on their team who otherwise doesnt make it.
But its not near the amount politics of travel teams networks  |

From what I have seen, tryouts are pretty fair. I believe that coaches want to win and that means putting the best players on the field. Upperclassmen, seniors in particular, will get the benefit of the doubt, but if an underclassman is clearly better, he will play.
I have heard complaints about politics and unfair assessments and all that over the years. My opinion is that usually comes from parents who have an inflated view of their son's abilities. My advice would be that if your son doesn't make the team you think he should, encourage your son to accept the decision and work very hard to improve and give it a shot next year.
The other thing that a player can do is work very hard and perform on the team they are assigned to. If you don't make varsity, but are placed on JV, let your performance speak for itself. Be a standout and play so far above the other JV players that you will make the coach realize that he made a mistake. I have seen kids pulled up to varsity throughout the year on numerous occasions. The worst thing you can do is complain and be a sour grape. I don't want to say that the coach will put you on a "bad" list, but it definetely can influence the coach's opinion of the player. |

This age of the boys they really need to see strict fairness from the adult coaches that carrys on farther than just playing sports !!

If you think for a minute that the "try outs" are JUST about who plays the best......go to the coaches meeting before try outs.
I was shocked how they are STILL so narcissistic.

Yes, keep your kid positive. And your right, the coach needs to field the best 9. But power corrupts...end of story.
Parents should sit with their mouths shut...no matter what? Have we learned nothing?
And BTW.....my kid started last year. That is the truth. If the math teacher was wrong...to anyone, I would do the same thing. Speak out! |

The only thing I think a parent should speak up about is the health and safety of their child. If the coach is abusing a pitcher or physically or emotionally abusing a player, something should be said. When it comes down to play time, place in the batting order, or any field related matters, I believe we as parents should keep our mouths shut. If the player is not happy with any of these things, he should approach the coach, not the parent.
High School begins Big Boy Baseball. It's time to let go and let your kid grow up and handle these issues.
