For those of you with older and or maybe larger kids: Are you going to use a drop 5 USSA bat or a drop 3 BBCOR bat? My son currently swings a drop 5. It does not have the stamp, so we will need to replace it. I think he could handle a drop 3, but I am wondering if combining the extra weight with the lack of pop is a good idea.
One side says get him used to a drop 3. He will need it in a few years. The other side says get used to less pop first.
I am also asusming the USSSA bat would have more pop then the BBCOR. Anyone know?

| He just turned 12 so he can use either. He used a 32/27 this past spring. I could either get a new 32/27 with the stamp or a BBCOR 32/29. The weight is not the issue. The real question is the "pop". |

Unless BBCOR is required by his age group, why don't you get a used BESR -3 and let him use it. You can get it MUCH cheaper, won't sacrifice as much in pop and can avoid the high cost of a BBCOR. You could then assess how he's handling the weight and then decide if you need to buy a USSSA stamped -5 or not. If the -3 doesn't work out, then you can still use it as a cage bat in the meantime which will help build up his strength and confidence for when he does have to use -3.
I'd recommend swinging several of the -3's and the balance varies and will certainly affect his swing. I've found the Demarini Voodoo to be one of the more balanced. We first began using it when my oldest was in 13u and we were looking for a -5. We swung several and then he said the -3 Voodoo felt just like the other -5's. I swung them and agreed, so we went with it and never looked back.
This past year he needed a new bat. We swung 3 completely different brands of 33-30 against a swing speed monitor in the store. There was a difference of about 5 mph between the fastest and slowest bats. The speeds and difference remained consistent between the three bats over about 100 swings. We went with the one that was consistently the fastest swing speed. |

Are you saying a BESR will be USSSA legal for 2012? I was under the impression that it either has to be USSSA's BPF 1.15 or BBCOR. |

No, I'm not saying that BESR is acceptable for USSSA tourneys, but as of now, the only sanctioning body that has a bat requirement is USSSA. So if you are playing Triple Crown or any other tourney, the stamp or BBCOR isn't an issue.

| thanks itaboutbb...Does this take effect for this Fall ball? Still a little unclear about using 2011 approved 2 1/4 bats for fall or 2012. I must have heard wrong I thought 2011 drop -8 big barrels were legal. |

| New twist I heard at practice that USSSA bats that could be grandfather in can recieve a sticker for that bat. Really how? |
