I recently heard a few base coaches instructing their players in the batter's box to step to the ball so they could hit the outside pitch. Now, I'm no hitting expert but to me it seems to make more sense to just let the ball get a littler deeper and take your hands to that outside pitch.
What is the correct approach? I'd hate to tell this coach he's wrong, these kids playing on the big fields. |

| Im no expert either but every instructor I have seen teach hitting says let the ball get deeper on the outside pitch, further outside the deeper you let it get! |

Same swing for all pitches it's how deep you let the ball |

| If the kid has the proper plate coverage when he gets in the batters box then he should be able to get any pitch in the strike zone. The problem I see is that many kids don't get that plate coverage correct. Then depending on the age you will have a strike zone that is not a true strike zone for the kid to properly implement hitting the outside pitch. Therefore, to avoid getting rung up some will make their own adjustment or may be taught improperly thus creating bad habits in the end. However, the key to successfully hitting the outside pitch correctly is to let it get deeper in the hitting zone and nothing more. If implemented properly the ball should be hit to the right side of the field for right handed batters and left side for left handed batters. Yes, occassionally you will have that major leaguer with the ability to lean out over the plate and punch or pull the low/outside pitch yard but rarely do they even do it by stepping to the outside. Although, when it's time to battle up there the mechanics can tend to go out the door at any level and whatever it takes to make something happen takes over. Especially with the game on the line. |
