The National Umpires Association (Atlanta, Ga.) was selected in 2008, 2009 and 2010 by Baseball America and USA Baseball as the Nation’s #1 Umpire Association.
National Umpires Association is one of the largest amateur umpire associations in the country. It is based out of Atlanta, Georgia. NUA is not a local group. NUA's national membership consists of numerous experienced college and high school umpires. These umpires will travel here to Atlanta on a regular basis from places like Texas, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, California, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, Kentucky, Canada, West Virginia, Washington, Massachusetts and Oregon just to name a few.
Recently NUA was was selected to work the 2008 AFLAC All-American Classic game played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California and also was selected to work the 2009 & 2010 AFLAC Classic played at Petco Park in San Diego, California. NUA works National Tournaments 10 months out of the year including the WWBA & BCS Perfect Game USA National Championship Series, CABA World Series, USSSA Super NIT, Triple Crown Series and many more. Over the years NUA has also been selected to work several of the Nation’s top Tournaments hosted by the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson University, Auburn University, University of Southern California, LSU, San Diego State University and many others.
Each umpire is NUA certified and must graduate from the NUA 6-week classroom and field training school that takes place each January and September. Currently NUA has more than 200+ national umpires who all have NUA national tournament experience. This is selected group of the nation’s top experienced umpires.
NUA is directed by Jim Stros, of Woodstock, Georgia. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Jim is a 1990 graduate of Michigan State University. At Michigan State, Jim was a relief pitcher from 1987-1990. He currently holds three single season Big Ten appearance records as one of the all-time leaders in career appearances at Michigan State. After graduation, Jim had the opportunity to pursue baseball professionally for three seasons in the springs of 1991-1993, then found another love for the game after becoming an umpire 20 years ago.
For the past 20 years Jim has umpired at all levels working several Perfect Game National Championship games. He has built numerous relationships with high school and college coaches across the country. In 1993, at the Major League Umpires International Camp, professional umpires Mike Reilly, Joe Brinkman, Paul Nauert and Gerry Davis selected Jim as the #1 umpire in his class. Jim was also voted Most Outstanding Umpire in his class at the 1993 NCAA Southern Umpires School. Jim went on to umpire four full NCAA college seasons before becoming the director full time for National Umpires Association.

Jim,
If someone wanted to jump from the Coaching side of the lines and was interested in joing the umpiring ranks what would be your suggested course of action? Is the 1st step signing up for the 6 week class you mention or is this a step you go to once you have begun umping elsewhere 1st? |

Over the years I have noticed that coaches with interest of becoming an umpire usually do very well making this transition. Please give me call anytime and I will be happy to help you better understand the steps on how to do so.
