Travel ball has become a business, not a sport. I am aware of some organizations charging north of $4000 to play ball. With basic costs being, tourney fees, uniforms, equipment and the rest going to "facilities", "coaches" and "organizations", I would be curious to know who thinks what a good value is or which organization offers a good value for the $$?
I think these prices are just plain stupid. |

Absolutely agree that travel baseball has become a business and watered-down talent. We are on a mission to change the culture obe kid and family at a time. We teach the game at practices and games not charging you more $ to come to a camp that we should already be teaching these skills.

Agree 100%....I am a coach of a rising 11u team in Cobb County. We charge probably 1/3 of what the larger programs charge. I offer anyone that opens my posts, to ask me anything about our programs, fees, etc. We don't have PAID coaches....as that obviously increases fees. Our coaches have pro-ball and D1 playing experience. College summer-league coaching experience. Our program (Allatoona Mohawks) is in it for the right reasons...no financial reasons.

This is the way we did it with my older son up through Cooperstown. We charged $1500 and that covered expenses. We were parent coaches, no bias, and retained 90% of our kids year to year. It can be done, but you just don’t see it often enough |

Based on the age (re: cost of tourneys), size of roster, whether part of a park/org or independent, and/or coaching desires (paid or dad), it can add up quick... In my experiences you're looking at anywhere from:
Coaching cost: $0 (dads) up to $15K (yes, I've seen 'paid' or 'pro' coaches) Field: $0 (part of an org, more on this later) up to $3K annual usage Indoor: $0 up to $2K (based on any contract or amount needed) Uniforms: $200 per player, up to... (the sky is the limit based on the amount of 'swag') Tourneys: $6,000 ($500 x 12 for younger ages) up to $15,000+ ($1,700 x 9 for the older ages)
Summary: Dad run team, to access with a field for free: ~$10K ($1K indoor, $2,400 unis, $6K tourneys, $600 balls/ins)-- $833.33 per player (12 players) Paid coach team, field rental, more included in unis: ~$46K ($15K coach, $3K field, $2K indoor, $9K unis, $16K tourneys, $800 balls/ins)-- $3,833 per (12 players)
It adds up quick. And this is everything is transparent. Add in orgs 'overhead' and it goes up from there...
Now, if you're part of orgs that have fields, that you don't have to 'rent', you may have to pay 'org fees' ($200-$500 each player, each year), you may be "required" to purchase balls, gear, and all uniforms through the org-- who could be setting the price to make some on each sale as well. Each team may be required to play in the org's golf tourney ($400-$1K each team), or participate in a fundraiser (man hours). In a lot of cases, you may have 'dad run' teams out of organizations that are completely transparent about the budget-- even if it's exorbitant as certain aspects are beyond their control-- all for the field usage, or the name on their jersey.
However, as you see in my breakdown, two HUGE expenses are "paid coaches" and tourneys. Why is the coaching so expensive? Because somewhere, someone will pay that price, so then the coach feels they deserve that... The tourneys? Welp, look no further than PG. $500-$700+ ea. (under 14U) and they are FULL each weekend. Don't like those 'higher prices'? TL, GS, SS are all available. Some just want to play in PG, others NEED to, to find competition so they aren't considered sand bagging in lower level tourneys.
Ultimately, us as consumers have set some of these prices. Some, in the area, are and have been willing to pay the higher prices for services (coaching/tourneys). But yes, there are plenty of orgs out there, that want 'their cut' in every single aspect of it (unis, gear, access fees, indoor, coach's fees, etc).

The uniform fees can really depend on the organization. Some orgs have an exclusive provider. Org XYZ may require each player pay $1200 for uniforms and gear from Mizuno (as an example). The uniforms and gear only costs $1000. The extra $200 per player is then returned to Org YXZ as a "donation" from Mizuno. This allows Org XYZ to pay for field improvements or scholarships for players that can't afford to pay. |
