When I was a kid the only summer ball for high school kids was legion baseball. If I recall correctly it was free. Played a lot of games and competitive. I know Legion ball is still around.
The point is, "Is legion ball a viable alternative to travel ball?" Why/why not? Is legion ball more popular in smaller communities far from big baseball hubs, like Atl.? |

| I played Legion ball, back in the day, in NJ. That was all there was. As best I can tell, it is still very big. Then, as now, it was tied very closely to the high school programs. It seems to be bigger in the Northeast. |

Legion ball is an alternative but for only the select few. For every child that plays legion there is 3-4 that play travel. Plus legion ball takes some high school
grads before they head off to college not giving the high school er a slot. Legion ball is great but there has to be other options for the rest. |

But where are the Legion teams in GA? I don't hear about any in Cobb County. I also played Legion ball in NJ, teams were created by combining kids from 3 high schools and those boundaries were predefined. So a coach was limited to kids from those specific schools, he couldn't grab anyone he wanted. But it was a higher level of ball vs high school ball. I was recently in SC on vacation and saw some newspaper write ups on the SC American Legion State championship.
I have a nephew that plays Junior American Legion in NJ. It appears they made an under 17 age group and an under 19 age group.
Seems like this would be another option for the high school coaches that like to have high school summer teams. |

I played for Springfield (NJ) Post 228 from 1978-1982. We combined Springfield, Summit, New Providence, and Kenilworth, they all have their own teams now. We played all over NJ, NY, CT, PA, and DE. Had a blast, went to the regionals twice (Boyertown, PA I think).
It didn't cost a dime. The American Legion Post paid for just about everything. |

| How about being seen by scouts playing legion? Do they get the attention of lets say the perfect game? Having just come off the 15u perfect game and making it the sweet 16, no scouts came to watch us. Just wondering if travel ball is worth the money. Heck it cost me 50 bucks a game for the family to watch our son. |

Bill,
None of those guys are les than 35. American Legion used to be one of the few ways to play travel 25-30 years ago. Today is does not provide the same visibility. Most of the time the competition is a lot less than standard travel. |

| I agree with itsjust. If a kid is good enough no matter where they play a scout will find you or hear about you. Mike Piazza, Mike Mussina, Eric Young, Jamie Moyer all played Legion in PA. BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD DAYS |

| Biged-at 15U, know that you really won't get scouts looking at the teams. They can't even speak with you about baseball at that age. My son threw a no-hitter in the 18u Perfect game a couple of years ago. He was only a freshman and 15. When the scouts found that out after speaking with him, they immediately said see you in a couple of years, great job. You can't expect much of anything until they are really juniors. American Legion has a great tournament, Regionals and World Series. It is still very big in the North East and West of the Rockies. Not as expensive and can be just as competitive depending upon what region you play in. |
