I want this to be a sounding board to rate USSSA in Georgia. Let us know where you rank them overall. Papa will start it off by saying Bubba has tried hard and most likely done everything he told us he would do but as I told Bubba himself without any authority his efforts have been and will be wasted. Georgia USSSA is still being run by Matt and he could care less about anything other than the bottom line.
Without all of the Georgia teams banding and sticking together next year will be a repeat of this year. USSSA understands one thing and one thing alone and that is money and as long as we dish it out and not expect something for it they will continue to get the gold mine and the Ga teams will get the shaft.
If the teams agree than I will be front and center helping organize a Boycott next year that will speak to USSSA the only place they will ever listen to us and that is their "Checkbook". I know that there are some USSSA events that we all like to play in so if we boycott someone will have to step up and replace the prize USSSA events with an alternative. What is the difference if the same teams play the Slugfest under the Triple Crown banner instead of USSSA. Am I missing something or does it matter little to us who is running it if it being run right. If most are happy then we will all continue with the "status guo" |

Papa - I like the way you think ! Hit them at state and national level....can you imagine an elite 32 without anybody showing up ? Now that would garner some attention. My only question is, do the teams that are ranked top 25 by USSSA have the "baseballs" to to stand up and make such a statement on behalf of our youth ? |

I think you are wrong on USSSA, it is built on the idea of promoting baseball tournaments as a buisness. Unfortunatly Ga. has some real unbuisness like bodies in charge of USSSA. Papa don't you think that if Tony from TC were to become the USSSA head in the state that he would do just as well with it as he has TC, if you think he would then your problem is not with USSSA it is with the people in charge of USSSA in Ga.
This is just an attempt to look at it another way and has no political point to be made. If you are not behined or do not agree with Obama's policies your not going to boycott America are you?
As of right now USSSA has the biggest and best World Series going, it provides teams from all over the Nation to come together and compete at each age groups respected highest level. USSSA has the only ranking system flawless or not that allows teams the opportunity to keep up with teams win, lose record from north to south and east to west. It also gives teams the chance to look at another teams online roster to better keep up with kids as individuals.
I agree that no one organization is perfect and myself enjoy playing in all the different one's that we can because not only are the teams in competition but also the organizations are. I just don't think it would be wise to boycott any group for fear of losing the many great things that USSSA does provide us with.

Based on what our team endured this year we will play a very limited USSSA schedule if any. Bubba is helpful, and a straight shooter, but he cannot do everything. We had really good experiences outside of USSSA this season. |

If triple crown started a ranking system next year that would really seal the deal for them over usssa. |

I think what TC has over USSSA is Tony. It would be impossible for Tony to run as many tournaments as are run under the USSSA badge. USSSA doesn't seem to care about the quality of their product, just the quantity. |

Keep in mind that my friend 10BB is from Florida and does not begin to experience the problems that Georgia teams face. I know him well enough to know that if his team got treated the way Georgia teams are being treated by USSSA that he would be the first to vote "DON'T PLAY WITH THEM". Using the same sort of logic that 10BB used would the Elite 32 not be the same thing if governed say by Triple Crown. I think it would and I know that the teams would be treated with much greater respect. 10BB talks of a ranking system. If USSSA has such a good ranking system then why are there 2 teams from Louisiana that both have bad losing records. Do you think some politics might be involved since the national director lives in Louisiana. Talk about "Home Cooking". How can you say it is Elite if several of the teams don't have very good records. I wish we were closer to Florida and got to enjoy the experience 10BB has but this is a question for Georgia teams. There are many very Elite teams in the tournament and these great teams is what will make this tournament but if these same teams chose to play each other in Triple Crown or Nations it would be just as special. What I am saying is that USSSA does not make this tournament special, The coming together of these great teams does. |

10BB - To utilize your political analogy, I absolutely boycott things in America when things don't go as I like. This is AMERICA and we have varying opportunities. This Republic was founded on capitalism. The way you change things is by impacting someones bottom line. If I don't care for a particular administration, I go to the polls and vote them OUT ! If I don't like a restaurants food...I don't buy their food, I go to a restaurant where I like the food. Is that a boycott ? In a sense it is as my money and vote speak much louder than my voice. You can either complain or do something about it. What you do is up to you and what you are trying to accomplish. To complain year after year does no good if it does not get you the results you desire. At that point you can either give up, or change your strategy. I believe what Papa is suggesting is a change of strategy to impart some positive CHANGE at USSSA.
I don't think Papa wants to close down the USSSA restaurant, he's just trying to influence a change in menu items so he can be an ongoing customer at the USSSA restaurant. If enough of us do the same, we may get the change in menu items we request. |

Until they are forced (by Money) to make changes , they wont ! They will just keep cashing in the checks. We are a little ahead of you pappa. we did not play one usssa game this year and had a great time. did not miss them one bit. Im for the boy cot. 10 BB with all due respect, you dont have to deal with GA. usssa every week like we do up here. Sometimes you have to take a stand to get things done, All of us here in ga have been waiting for several years for them to change. but obviously " ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN " |

gasbag: Robert Duvall was the Consilare (not sure if this is spelled right) for Marlon Brando in the Godfather series. What would you charge to be Papa's right hand man in this battle with USSSA. I have had a lot of emails and calls on this one and from the people that I have been speaking with and USSSA had better start listening to the complaints we have here in Georgia or prepare an exit strategy. Let's start with the first major tournament next year and all find some other organization that will accept the same teams that USSSA would have had and run the same tournament under another banner. |

Well to say you are going to boycott Usssa in ga, you would be saying you are going to be boycotting ECB facilities. That in itself would crush that facility if those tournaments were unattended... |

Our team is based in Southeast Georgia and we have the same feelings about GA U$$$A as you......there is a need for change. It is not, as Matt puts it, "FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME" but for the love of the money. Hence, the new logo....U$$$A.
Our team has played in Triple Crown events run by Tony V. You could not ask for a better guy to deal with. He makes you feel like you are appreciated. We play tournament ball in South Carolina in USSSA tournaments. We are treated with respect and courtesy by their State Director, Jason Gross. Jason does his very best to make it enjoyable and fun for the teams that play in his tournaments. We also play Nations Baseball and just got back from North Carolina. Don Mason and his crew were awesome hosts for the tournament. It wasn't about the money it was all about having a good time and playing quality baseball.
The bottom line is this......it is not the association (TC, Nations, USSSA, etc.) that we are fed up with. It is the people that occupy the ivory tower at GA U$$$A that we are tired of. We control their destiny and the only way to get their attention is to hit them where it hurts the most.....in their pocket book.
My time is up and I thank you for yours. |

1st Rule that needs to be changed in USSSA is the pitching rules. Most major league pitchers don't pitch 8 innings in three days(and the tournament is usually played within a 48 hour window, think of how absurd that is), why would it be ok for a 9-12 year old to. Most major leaguers don't throw in two to three consecutive games in a day, why would it be ok for a 9-12 year old to. This allows for more pitchers to be developed in this crucial stage in their life. That would be my first suggestion as far as rules go... |

To answer itsjustLLbaseball: I think the major change and the most beneficial would be a change of management. What I am reading is that most feel that it not the Georgia USSSA message as it is the Georgia USSSA messenger. I would never promote any type boycott against ECB or their facilities as this is the home of Georgia Youth Baseball and we have loved every minute we play there. But I would suggest that ECB read these posts and understand that the teams in Georgia are fed up and I mean fed up to the point of being "MAD AS H---." not with the program but with the attitude of the Director. You bring up the pitching rules and this certainly needs to be addressed. I keep asking but can't get an answer as to why Florida gets 4 Super NIT's, Alabama 2, and Georgia 1 when neither of the above states support USSSA any more than Georgia. Keep in mind that 2 of the Super NIT's in Florida had 3 teams participate. How can a major team get any satisfaction out of winning a 3 team round robin. Bring one of their Super NIT's to Georgia and we would have filled it up but they don't even want to discuss it. It's issue's like this that proves that their most persistent complaint is lack of communication. The Director will not answer his phone, won't return most phone call's and never and I mean never answer an email but they don't have any problem in taking your check to the bank. |

Everyone is correct the only way to facilitate change is by hitting a company in its pocket book. However its not just as simple as boycotting games and having some other organization put on those same tournaments. There is an old saying, The Man with the Gold MAKES THE RULES. The gold is who controls the field leases and guess who controls most of those fields and dates...................... Usssa tournament directors. These tournament complexes are leased a year or more in advance in most cases by whatever area tournament director is putting on tournaments for those dates.
Florida just ran in to the same problem and its going to hit them hard in the fall. The old tournament director for Central Florida just left for AAU and he has all the tournament complexes leased for at least a year out with very few dates available for any other tournament organization. So teams from the Orlando area will now be forced to either play in Tampa or not play Usssa at all. I can tell you from the coaches I have spoken too no one is going to travel to Tampa to play. Hence Usssa will not have as good of a year as they did this year.
I spoke to another baseball organization in Georgia the other day and was told the reason they cant put on more tournaments is because of getting the fields for the tournaments. This group was trying to find alternatives in North Florida. So my point with all this is. Its a great idea but in my humble opinion you wont be able to play the same tournaments in Georgia through some other organization. Your only option will be to play in South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida. This will hurt Georgia Usssa and force Usssa corp to make some changes. Unlike Nations and TC where their state directors have to purchase areas/states, Usssa appoints its tournament/state directors and can terminate their association with them at any time. However as mentioned would any business terminate anyone who controls the product they are selling ( Field Complexes )
Until Usssa Corp facilitates the leases for the fields everyone is under the mercy of the tournament/state directors who control these baseball complexes. OR lol the first person on this board who shells out about 6 million dollars to build a baseball complex can escape this Usssa nightmare. |

Does anyone know if this is true. Does USSSA have long term leases at East Cobb and the Slugfest or is it year to year. Let's keep digging and bring all the dirty laundry to the top of the heap so we might clean it up. What about the State USSSA tourney for next year. Where will it be held and when. It will take us all to get the answers we are looking for but it can be done. G-Man, My idea is simple and goes something like this and might be to simple. If USSSA is holding a big tournament with say 16 12U teams and these teams are not satisfied with USSSA. Why can't these same 16 teams choose to play in a competitor's of USSSA the same weekend on different fields until some of the lease's expire. Surely USSSA would not keep renewing leases when no teams are playing. |

Papa I like your idea but the primary problem with it is all these organizations are fighting for the same fields. There are only a certain number of complexes that has enough fields to hold these tournaments. From what I have been told by others in the past. If they could get these fields they would hold more tournaments. Again you have the same issues in Florida. Nations, Usssa and AAU are all fighting for the same complexes but until a month ago Usssa controled them. Now because that ex Usssa director left for AAU. Now AAU controls most of the tournament complexes. Which means AAU will control most of the tournaments next year in central Florida.
The issue with playing in a competitors tournament the same weekend as Usssa is that even when Usssa is having a big event tournament other Usssa directors in different parts of the state are holding other Usssa events. So therefore competitors would have the issue of finding field space to house such a large pool of teams. As I mentioned in my last post the way you change Georgia is to play Usssa in other states like Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama and not in Georgia. All those states boarder most teams.
Imagine if you will. A tournament director holds leases for a baseball complex say for 20 tournaments for the year. Not one team registers for any of those tournaments. Because of no one playing, this director would generate no money but yet still have to pay for that complex for that weekend. How long do you think this person could hang on to those leases. My guess is they would have to sell those leases to their competitors for some of those tournament dates. I know in Florida these tournament complexes cost the directors $ 2000 to $5000 per weekend Fri - Sun depending on the number of fields being used.
Here is the other issue I see. Sure everyone seems gung ho right now about this. However I see this happening. One weekend comes up and the team manager, parents and kids are all going we want to play this weekend. There is a Usssa tournament 20 mins away or one 3 hours away out of Georgia. I know what most parents are going to choose.
Some may say I am crazy but until some of the more popular organizations build their own baseball complexes in whats considered hotbeds for travel baseball. It will always be the man with the gold makes the rules. Which means the organization who controls the most baseball complexes will control travel ball tournaments.

GMan - You are correct about these guys and building their own complexes....one very large organization tried to put something together in west Cobb County recently but it got shot down. They wanted some County funding participation ( of some sort....not exactly sure of what type ) I'm told and the County thanks but NO thanks. Makes what Gerry Umpenhour did look like shear genius if you ask me. No wonder the guy is a multi-millionaire ! He was WAY out ahead of the business curve of travel baseball and the current trend. |

then play Triple Crown if you dont like or agree with the pitching rules. They are much more restrictive. 6 innings for a tournament for a 9-12u and 7 for 13-14u. Pitchers may get an additional inning if they go to a 5th game. That solves that problem. |

Why wouldn't we play in a USSSA tournament because of the pitching rules, it has nothing to do with our team, we monitor who and how much is thrown, I am just stating as a whole, that is a rule that needs to be changed for the kids futures on both ends, over developed and under developed.... |

For the total experience, if I had to make a choice to only pick one sanction body, I would still choose USSSA. I will put Tony V. up against anyone on running a tournament but take him out of the equation and I am not jumping up and down for Triple Crown either. Tony makes TC, not vice versa. If Tony came in and said "I will be running independent tournaments from now on." he would still get the same teams entering his tournament.
Where I think USSSA goes wrong is they don't coordinate the tournament directing. That is farmed out to others to run. There is no common template for how they are to be ran. Rules and a website to manage game updates on are available, but how they should be ran is up to the director. There should be better guidelines on how to run them. |

AlterEgo: The reason the USSSA tournaments are not coordinated is that the director of USSSA in Georgia will not respond to any of the Georgia's teams concerns and I don't think that they ever will until something drastic is done to convince them to come to the table and talk about how we all could make travel baseball better.
It's sort of like the old labor disputes and the pickets and the scab's. That was a rough time but the worker's knew the only way that they would get a fair shake was if they hurt the BIG BOYS in their pocket book and they took drastic measures for their cause. |

All,
I applaud you on wanting to boycott USSSA because that means you realize it’s a business and the best way to show companies’ you mean business is to stop using their product.
Aside from the obvious fraud cases where Tournament Directors (TD) promise certain things and then don’t deliver (dragging fields, updated scores, etc.) you guys should only expect to get games from them. We all know the refund policies if we don’t play all the games. Occasionally a TD will make you play a game in freezing or rainy conditions just to reduce the amount of the refund. If so then don’t play in another event hosted by that TD.
• If you are upset because rankings seem unfair, be happy that you beat the teams you played and move on. • If you think the pitching rules are wrong, play tournaments that best suit your pitching setup. • If you think tournament companies are just after your money, then you are right. Theses are businesses that need to be profitable. For some reason we have put too much emphasis on being ranked #1 by these guys. I wonder if the national or even state #1 ranked 2009 10U team every received a call from the USSSA EVP of Baseball Operations congratulating them on a “fine” season.
Unfortunately this topic is not new and is now getting old. If you want to boycott USSSA that’s fine by me (at 16U I don’t play in tournaments because it’s TC, USSSA, USTBA, etc.) I look at who is hosting and go there just to get 3 – 5 games.
Rather than getting guys together to boycott an organization how about you first try one or all of the following:
1. Contact the National USSSA guys (listed below) to express your displeasure (showing a list of coaches, like a petition, might help as well). Let them know we are not happy with X-Y-Z. If you don’t hear from them or they direct you back to the GAUSSSA then (as the kids say) “It’s ON” let’s shut down GA. 2. Come up with minimum guide lines on what we think a good tournament has. Publish a list of TDs that do it right. Only go to tournaments of guys who are on the list. Make the TDs want to be on the list. BTW, if you are 14U or older high school tournaments provide good venues and structure (although some do not offer championship rounds). I have used Loganville HS and Eagles Landing HS. I have had success with JBAthletics. Tim Ashe in Monroe works hard and will work with you as well. Now have any of these guys had issues? Probably, but my most recent experience was good so I am seeking them out this fall. 3. Temper our enthusiasm about tournaments a little. In a setup where not all teams play and participate in every tournament, you can only be the champion over teams that you play. Somewhere out there is an NAIA team that thinks they are better the South Carolina but the NCAA and College Word Series says something different.
As much as we want to blame our State Director and his people, the USSSA higher ups are obviously happy with his performance.
If you are unhappy and feeling ignored voice your concerns to the main guys (call, write, fax or email). I got these names off their website.
