No sour grapes here at all, Tribe won!
What do we have to do to have quality umpiring at what are suppose to be premier USSSA events. The umpires this entire weekend were terrible. I even spoke to one of the guys we know from Atlanta and he stated this was the weakest crew he has worked with. Is there a solve? Does USSSA need to charge more and get crews that may actually know the rules? much less a strike zone. Rec umpires just do not get it done at the is level. Thoughts? |

You are dealing with someone who wants to: 1. Sweat in the sun for 2 hours, off 30 minutes, sweat again, off again, repeat.
2. Get heckled my the parents who are SURE they know the rules but jaws hang open with an ump yells INFIELD FLY...huh, what just happened can be heard all around as the grandma screams "but he dropped the ball!!!!"
3. Deal with kids who have a hard time finding the strike zone, but always seem to find the umpire
4. Pitchers/coaches/parents questioning their strike zone
5 and do all that for $35 per game
Can't imagine why there is a shortage of quality umps. |

It is what it is....
I talked to an ump after one of our games a while back. Kid was constantly going to his mouth while on the rubber, not once was a balk or illegal pitch called. Also, sort of dumb, because the kid was actually tipping his pitches doing this if anyone was to pick up on it. It was 70-80 degrees out so none of this cold weather nonsense either. I politely asked the ump after the game what his interpretation of it was as I was curious due to it never being called. (It did not have any impact on the outcome of the game and I noted that to him as well). When he said he had never heard of that I about died. Bottom line I don't think some of these umps know half of the rules out there.
As far as strike zones, who knows what they are calling, I've seen shoe box size zones, to one where you could drive a tank through. Also, its where the ball passes over the plate, not where the catcher catches or frames it. As I've told my son, the strike zone is whatever they are calling, so watch the game before and watch your teammates at bats, because if you think they are going to all get it right you are kidding yourself!

If ya ask me, it’s become a problem everywhere. Even perfect game has had some real stinkers this year that I’ve witnessed and we’ve not seen that before (for the most part, PG umps were usually the most consistent IMO). Perhaps the “good ones” are moving to the older age groups - who knows. Whatever the case, it’s seems worse this season than in the last few.
Umps making bad calls, umps with seemingly huge egos looking to toss coaches questioning a ruling even respectfully. Umps engaging with fans in the stands who don’t like a call. They need to focus on the game, not argue with someone sitting outside the fence who thinks they know better, unless it’s over the top. Frankly those folks look sillier arguing with themselves if the ump just keeps his back to them. |

They aren't in the older age groups....they are just far and few between. |
