It's obviously that time of the season, teams are finishing up 2010 and focusing on 2011. Question for the coaches and parents, how many kids are actually offered spots through a traditional try out vs. coaches scouting players through a season and recruiting them now? JMHO, I think the stronger players get recruited and the rest take their chances through try outs.

Also, there always seems to be many new teams popping up, where will all of these teams find players? The all star ranks are already baron of talent and last I counted, there were already a half a dozen new travel teams posting for kids.

Mr. know-it-all here, I have the answer...

Every travel team will cut 1 or more boys, or their parents will seek a better fit for their son. If there are 100 travel teams, there's about 150 boys. Some Rec all stars who were good enough for travel, but had family issues (divorce, lost job, job travel, financial, Coaching the older son, ect.) that have now changed, will join in. Some Assistant Coaches who didn't see eye to eye with their Head Coaches will split away. A few will move in from out of State. So, there you go, 200+ travel ballers to fill slots on 18 new teams.

Now, here's the dilemma... What if the existing travel teams cannot replace the boys that left? The Coaches get anxious and bail to other teams, and there's a bunch more boys set adrift. There's ~50 more caught up in musical chairs.

Don't worry, anyone who wants to play travel ball, will play travel ball. There will always be an Elite team or two, a few Majors, a small group of AAA's, a large group of AA's, and some A's.

Its the natural order of things.

I think there is a lot of truth in that there will be musical chairs with a bunch of players on current teams but does that make additional players available to all of the new teams? This is where I think those kids that didn't make travel teams last year will have an opportunity to make a team this time, you'll also have some kids coming from all stars but outside of a few teams they've been picked over pretty good.

As far as kids moving in/out of town, I always said that is a wash because you have kids move out at the same time so I don't think you net anything.
