I would like some feedback from other former baseball players/dads. I was never made to wear a cup until I was around 11 or 12 years old, yet it is encouraged on my sons 8 year old baseball team. Is it really necessary at 8 years old? Certainly, if a child is catching, he should be wearing one, but what about the infielder? Outfielders?
We suggest it as well on our 8u team. It is mandatory for the catcher. Almost all of our infielders wear one and I believe there are only 2 or 3 out of the entire team that don't wear it. The players may as well get used to wearing one and they way kids can hit now its better to be safe than sorry. We have also seen an increase in confidence when fielding hard hit balls and short hop throws if the player knows they have some sort of protection.
I don't think my sons have EVER played a game without sliding shorts with a cup. If you start them early there is not a problem in the future in getting them to wear one. IMHO to play Baseball means you were a cup.
