There were alot of questions about what to expect from moving to 50/70 mound and bases. What if anything did you notice at the TC Tournament that changed from last season at 10U? |

I didn't notice too much different. I will say that the kid throwing the eephus pitch for OTC was pretty fun to watch from 50' though !! |

Unless you have an elite pitcher your D better be ready. |

Rocky, Great question. I watched 8 games this weekend, and was thinking about the same thing.
There were very few pitchers who could blow it by hitters from 50 feet. You'll need 65mph+ to extract tardy swings.
I thought I'd see more walks, and pitches in the dirt than I did.
There was a lot less stealing than last year, and the catchers threw more runners out or came very very close.
1st baseman were scooping more low throws.

Both my boys are at 60/90 ages, but it was my experience that in each age group it seemed like the boys had outgrown the old field dimensions. At the end of 12-50/70 seemed really small, at the end of 13-54/80 seemed really small.
It changes the way you play defense especially on bunts and stolen bases. Some kids will be deselected from the catcher position.
Early in the season it will be harder for pitchers to throw strikes as they get used to a new distance. |

Great word JC! I had to look it up on Wikipedia...see below:
An Eephus pitch (also spelled Ephus) in baseball is considered a junk[1] pitch with very low speed. The delivery from the pitcher has very low velocity and usually catches the hitter off-guard.

OTC wasn't the only team throwing "Eephus". Scorpions tried to sting Team Georgia with it, and almost pulled it off. Team Georgia's dugout openly cheered when that pitcher came out of the game, then promptly put up 5 runs. Realizing his mistake, the Scorpions Coach brought him back in, but the damage had been done.

bmoser; It's a fact that it seems great teams have trouble with the slow stuff but remember the Bandits threw the gas at Team Georgia. I will say there were some good defensive plays by the Bandits but I just don't think they could handle the stud they faced. Not only did he pitch a great game, his stick was on fire. |

There might be 10 11U pitchers in Georgia who can blow it by 11U Major hitters from 50 feet, and Team Georgia saw one of them. The Bandits have more where that came from, but we didn't see the Full Monty this past weekend. They'll never admit it, but that Bandit team was being held together by Ace bandages, guts, and a lot of pride.

The Bandits and several other teams got the chance this weekend to face not only the fastball but many different styles of change ups and off speed pitches. The team that will be most successful in the spring is the one that teaches the fundamentals of hitting. They are now getting to the age that they will need to recognize what the count is, what they might expect from the pitcher they are facing, and adjusting to the pitch when it is thrown. This will be the Bandits 3rd year of working on these very things and it really seems to be paying off as up to this weekend our weakness was hitting and judging by this weekend our hitting is beginning to improve a little. I can tell that this group is blessed with some really good coaches that are teaching the game of baseball the right way. I saw some great suicide squeeze bunts and even a hit and run. Great job Coaches and keep up the good work. |

Biggest thing I saw was the coaching as a whole seemed much better than it has been in the past. Maybe the players are just baseball smarter or more mature, but I was really impressed with all of the coaching I saw this weekend. Other than that like bmoser said, the kids I saw throwing 60 to 63 were not blowing it by anyone. To do that you have to get closer to the high 60's. I think some kids by mid 2010 season will be doing that and it will be harder to hit especially with the good change ups and curve balls I saw this weekend. Some teams were fooled by the slow stuff this weekend but come spring I bet most will have worked on it enough to adjust. Saw a few kids thrown out at 1B from the outfield or at 2B on a fielders choice because of the extra 5 feet on the bases. I expected to see more stealing of second base, but the teams that had good catchers and pitchers that could hold runners and get the ball to the plate fast were not allowing it. |
