Good article to learn to prepare for HS ball. All of us should make sure our son is in good shape and their arm is ready for the season when tryouts begin. If your arm is weak at tryouts, it will be noticed and will not get you the opportunity you may deserve. Don't make a bad impression because of lack of preparation.
Scouts do not really look at freshman. Unless there is a real standout (like throwing mid to upper 80's +). We went to a showcase event at University of South Carolina last summer as a 15 yr. old team. One of the assistants of the college team got talking to our coach and basically said he doesn't even look at 15 yr. olds - Too much changes between 15 and 17. The big kids become average and the small kids grow and become big. I will say it is not a bad idea to be in that environment (scouting & showcases) so that the kid is not shell shocked when he does it for the 1st time when it matters.
The only thing I will really disagree with the article is where it says basically to take a couple of weeks off after the high school season and then go look for a good summer travel team to play on. As you all know, travel ball tryouts for the following summer take place in August the previous summer. Start finding something at that time. You may be able to find a team late, but they may not be very good. If you are a superstud (especially a pitcher), you can get on a good team late, but you better be very, very good - not just average or a little above.
