We have taking a bit of a breather since the end of our summer season with very mild work mixed in here and there both on our own and with the team. For the most part, my son has really been given time to rest his arm, knees and body in general - (as important, his mind as well). I am one to always want to be on the field practicing and learning but I have to tell you that I have seen this time to be VERY beneficial!! I think the fall rest has been good for many reasons both physical and mental - not to mention also in the school arena. Every now and then, a BREATHER ain't too bad. I think there were some muscles inside my boys growing body that were yearning for some time to build and rebuild! Anyone out there feel the same (or different for that matter)? It's also nice to hear ....ahhh man .... we don't have practice tomorrow night.....dang!!!

I agree, my son have only played one fall season and got tired of baseball by the end of the summer season. So he enjoy spending time with his friends, playing basketball and going to school invites. People will say you have to play year round to keep up. My son is were he needs to be and loves the game of baseball.

This is the 1st year my son has not done much in the fall. We got done with our summer season at the end of July and took a month off of everything. We attended a Perfect Game showcase in the middle of September and I'll tell you this, it was hard for his arm to come back after that break. He got sore very quickly. I was really worried about his ability to keep his velocity for the showcase event as we only had about 3 weeks to prepare. Turns out his velocity was fine and he only had to pitch 2 innings facing 7 batters (one got on via error), so it wasn't too tough on his arm. We took another 2 weeks off and then got invited to play with a team at a World Championship event in Ft. Myers next weekend. I'm hoping he can back in shape for that since it is a real tournament and he will have to pitch more than two innings.

I guess the point I'm making is that it is nice to take time off, but it takes that much more work to get back in shape once you do come back to play.

BBALLMAN - I hear ya. And really, for what it is worth... as much as I like to think he is RESTING his arm, usually he has been throwing the football or just about anything he can get his hands on. Soooooo ... I guess he is just getting half rest - ha! I feel though his velocity (in regards to his norm) has picked up significantly plate to base.... base to base. Muscle memory comes back pretty quick I believe.

Even the pro's take some time off so I don't think it hurts....I think it helps. The pro's take off and I'm assuming, they have completed their growth as an adolescent. Our kids are still growing so it makes sense to me to take off to allow things to grow and adjust. Just make sure to start slow and build back up vs. picking up where you left off !

100% absolutely they need rest and this includes the professionals.

that is for physical and mental recovery that is for ALL AGES

it is indisputable , if you look at the effects of overuse and burnout so parents do this for your son instead of for your eagerness to see him on the field

Fall baseball in Georgia usually ends in late October, so there's plenty of time to rest even with a Fall schedule. Workouts for next year begin in January. Many Latin, Texas, Florida, and California players play year round. In the Dominican, they'll be playing this Christmas.

My son just finished Fall football (Thursday) & baseball (today), and I asked him if he wanted to take the year off from basketball - which has tryouts next week - and he told me "NO WAY". And he's excited about his baseball team next year, too. He makes decent grades, so why not?

And yeah, I wondered if I was burning him out - then I recalled I was a four sport guy in Middle, Junior High, & High School. Nobody thought about such things then.

I don't think folks are reacting to varying sports as much as playing one sport year round. One sport year round is waaay toooo much for anyone. It may not occur in every instance, but my guess is you have a significantly higher chance of injury as well as mental burn out and fire for the game !
