Most of the 38 games in the tournament were competitive with only a few ending with a double digit lead difference. All 15 teams played two pool play games Saturday and were seeded into the Gold Championship bracket. We offered two teams the ability swap spots in the brackets to enter the single elimination playing a different opponent than they faced in pool play...these were the only two teams that were in that particular situation, one of them declined the switch, so they played as they were scheduled.
The East Cobb Braves captured the #1 seed with a 2-0 record and NO runs allowed. They received a 1st round bye on Sunday. The Braves made it to the Semi's defeating the Norcross Blue Devils and then lost a close game to the Chiefs, 5-3 in the Semi's.
The Chiefs advanced into the Championship on the top side of the bracket defeating the Brookwood Broncos, Wills Park Yellow Jackets and E.C. Braves. On the other side of the bracket, the East Cobb Titans advanced to the Championship, defeating the N. Gwinnett Bulldogs Black, Team Wilson and ultimately, the Mill Creek Hawks (8-3) to enter the final game to face the Chiefs.
In the championship game, the Chiefs struck first with a two-run homer in the 1st inning, followed by a Titan response and solo homerun from Jordan Sudderth to make it a 2-1 game. Soon after that the Chiefs went on a tear of hitting and homeruns increasing their lead to 11-1. The Titans did NOT give up and fold, battling back with hits and aggressive base running to add 2 more runs during the game to avoid being run-ruled, but the Chiefs added several more homeruns to lengthen the lead to 20-3, the final score.
The Silver Consolation bracket included the Cherokee Reds, who had lost to the Georgia Stars, 9-2 and the Morristown Trojans who had lost to Team Wilson, 9-1. Once the entered the 4th game, they both advanced through the bracket on their way to the Silver Consolation bracket championship game.
The Cherokee Reds defeated the Brookwood Broncos and Sandy Plains Wildcats on their way to the title game. The Morristown Trojans defeated the Peachtree Ridge Lions and Norcoss Blue Devils to meet the Reds and play in the Silver bracket finale.
Morristown took an early lead and stretched it to 5-1, but the Reds battled back and came within 1 run, 5-4 in the last at bat of the game. The Trojans elected to strategically walk Michael Bean and Graham True to load the bases with 2 outs and it paid off as they were able to induce a ground out to first base to close out the game and win the Silver Championship consolation game. Both teams showed a lot of moxy and never gave up playing 6 games in 3 days.
The 2008 11U Team Wilson sponsored this event and also gave away a $125 Demarini Pro Maple D110 composite handled wooden bat to the “Home Run King” of the tournament. Tristan Mooney and Austin Krzeminski of the 11U East Cobb Titans lead the event in Home Runs AND RBI’s, (the tiebreaker). Both players elected to share the award and accepted the bat during the trophy ceremony.
We would like to thank everybody who came out and elected to play in our event! We are expecting to host 24 teams next year and do it all over again! Chuck Gilliam 11U Team Wilson
