Torre's staff will include Larry Bowa (bench coach), Marcel Lachemann (bullpen/pitching coach), Greg Maddux (pitching coach), Dale Murphy (first-base coach), Gerald Perry (hitting coach) and Willie Randolph (third-base coach). Lachemann and Maddux will oversee Team USA's pitching staff. "We are pleased to announce Team USA's coaching staff, which will join manager Joe Torre for the 2013 World Baseball Classic," said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball executive director/CEO. "Larry Bowa, Marcel Lachemann, Greg Maddux, Dale Murphy, Gerald Perry and Willie Randolph bring unprecedented credentials to the team, and we look forward to March when they represent our country in the game's premier international competition." "I'm really excited about this coaching staff for Team USA as we prepare for the 2013 World Baseball Classic in March," Torre said. "Our focus is to win this tournament while ensuring that all of our players return to their clubs healthy and ready to compete in the regular season. All of us are looking forward to the privilege of representing the USA." Bowa, Lachemann and Randolph are former Major League managers, and Perry is a longtime Major League hitting coach. Bowa, a five-time National League All-Star shortstop during a 16-year Major League career, managed the San Diego Padres in 1987-88 and the Philadelphia Phillies from 2001-04. Lachemann, who managed the California Angels from 1994-96, is the longtime pitching coach for USA Baseball's national teams, including for the 2006 World Baseball Classic and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Randolph, an 18-year Major League second baseman and a six-time All-Star, managed the New York Mets from 2005-08. Perry, a 13-year Major Leaguer and a 1988 All-Star, has served as the hitting coach for the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs. Murphy was a two-time NL Most Valuable Player (1982-83) and a seven-time NL All-Star in his 18-year Major League career. Maddux was a four-time NL Cy Young Award winner and an eight-time NL All-Star in his 23-year Major League career, during which he compiled a record of 355-227 with a 3.16 ERA and was a member of the 1995 world champion Atlanta Braves. |
