Just noticed some new teams up in AAA and a few in Majors. HP Sanchez, West GA Wolves, Georgia Nationals are a few I noticed. May be more. Copperheads Blue moved up to majors. |

I AGREE THAT ANY TIME A TEAM IS MOVED UP IN CLASS IT CAN BE A CHALLANGE.SEEMS THAT THE TEAMS THAT DO WELL R THE TEAMS THAT KNOW THAT WINNING TOURNAMENTS ISN'T THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL,PLAYER DEVELOPMENT AND JUST ENJOYING THE GAME SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF THE LIST FOR 12 YEAR OLDS.DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE TEAMS THAT WERE MOVED UP,BUT WISH THEM WELL. |

I actually think the two go somewhat hand in hand. The better the development, the more you gonna win. But you ask about development vs winning at "all cost strategy". Are you still batting more than 9 in pool play? You said that "batting 9 had been discussed in bracket play" I assume that discussion was at the very beginning so if i'm correct in my assumption then batting 9 in bracket play would not be changing focus from development to "all cost winning" according to the Coaches plan. What did the coach lay out at the beginning as far as his plan for development? Has he completely strayed away from that? Coaches sometimes get caught up in winning and forget that they are coaching 12 year olds where development should be priority #1. However, I again say that the 2 can go hand in hand when executed properly. Winning can be a huge motivator to 12 year olds. But I think that at this age, if you as a coach allow winning to take priority over development and the pure enjoyment of the game, then you are doing serious damage to the kids you are coaching as well as the game itself. Still, winning is important also. |

I always believe in "run with what you brung" if it got you there then stick with it. However, when you have players not getting it done at the plate and it continues over several weeks then I can understand it deep in the tournament. Just to be clear though, I really do not know the circumstances surrounding the coach's decision so I can not judge whether he has adopted a win at all cost strategy or not. BTW, congrats on the promotion from AA to AAA and good luck! |

Having been on a team thats been moved up, let me say that the losing way over shadowed the development. Losing stinks and you can tell the team until your blue in the face that your development will get better at a certain level and maybe thats true for the teams that can win at a different level, but if the teams not ready it will get old quick getting your brains beat out on Sunday because you don't have 9 pitchers. Development is important and it's high on the charts of things we should accomplish. Go from a winning team to a losing team is a tough mental task for a 12 year old...we might be losing, but look at your development. In my experience the development is less being moved up and getting your brains beat every Sunday. Now saying that, if your team is talented and you can win on that level (winning on Sunday not Saturday) great, but if not it won't take long to be requested to be moved back down where one is more competative. |

Our team was moved to major last year after a great start at aaa level. We had always focussed on the big picture of getting all of kids ready for the next level. We don't necessarily mind playing up to challenge our players. The biggest issue for us is the fact that there are no major tournaments in our area for the most part. I wonder how many other teams would play if forced to travel at least 4 hour round trip each weekend just to play. We had prepared our parents for the reality that we wouldn't always play deep on Sunday .We usually have to use pitching early to make it to Sunday and not have enough to go deep. However it has allowed us to develop more pitching and all of our players have stepped up their game. Other teams have won more by playing down to the talent and in my opinion have not improved as much. Every player on our club made their middle school baseball team this year and to me that is more important than that $3.00 trophy and some win-loss record you can view on the internet. |
